sharp, fun and full of relatability goodness. sofia khan made me felt seen for the first time. malik's talent in writing good one liners is superb and her stream of consciousness narrative worked so well.


i'm regretting the days i spent not knowing of this book's existence. but as the saying goes better late than never.

This book was definitely not written for me and that is probably the main reason I didn't love it. It was enjoyable, hence the rating.

I picked this one up in Pakistan near the beginning of the year. It was just the book I needed to read right now, something lighter and oh so funny! Sofia Kahn might be my best bookish friend lol her humour is so well written and I was actually laughing out loud so many times! I even marked pages with the funniest lines lol.

Sofia just ends things with a man she planned to marry because she did not want to live with him, his mother, father, brother, sister-in-law, their children, his other brother and sister-in-law and their children...well she just thought that was too much.

I like that this book is quite representative of different people lol you know not all Muslims think/act the same! One of her friends is divorced, one is getting married to a married man and her mother thinks that her hijab covers up her one beauty.

While this book was a little too long (400+ pages) and the ending was a little confusing and out of nowhere for me, I really had a fun time reading this book!

There is a sequel, I’m not sure if I want to read it though.

I was halfway through a very heavy book and its themes and content, on top of some rather stressful real-life situations, made me crave something a little lighter. Enter: Sofia Khan Is Not Obliged.

What a wonderful character is Sofia. I love her compassion, her flaws, and her constant and ardent attempts to be a better person and do her best whilst navigating the dramas of her own and loved ones' lives. 

Apart from one moment where she says that noone likes being a 'chub' (I disagree, I quite like being a chub), I loved seeing the world through her eyes. 

I also suspected from very early on who Sofia was going to end up with, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the ride. And her very slow and disbelieving realisation at the end... I won't say more, but it is very inkeeping with her character, and I loved that the essence of her character isn't changed all the way through.

Where this book wasn't necessarily bad, I felt that the novelty and enjoyment I felt at the beginning (with the writing style and concept) quickly fizzled out and I find myself having a hard time pushing through the book. It did have it's cute moments which urged me to continue reading however I will not be picking up the sequel, at least not any time soon, as I also felt that there were a lot of skips and jumps and events that seemed a little all over the place in my opinion. I gave this book 3 stars simply because it was an immersive read (once I sat down and dedicated enough time to become once again invested) and I did start liking Conall which kept me moving through the book but other than that, there is just something about this book that personally wasn't for me.
