Patty Blount

Shunned by her friends and even her father after she accuses the town golden boy of rape, Grace wonders if she can ever trust Ian, a classmate who is funny, kind, and has secrets of his own.

Some Boys

"Giving up is easy, not right. If doing the right thing were easy, nobody would ever do stuff they know is wrong, like kiss their daughter's dance instructor or rape an unconscious girl who already said no.”

"Grace is a girl. That's it. You want to slap on any other names, knock yourself out. But don't ever forget she's a girl first, and we don't treat girls like that. Feel me?"

The cops wanted to know if I was Zac's girlfriend, if I was drinking, doing drugs, if I ever I worked as a stripper, if I ever kissed Zac before that night. What the hell does any of that have to do with what happened? Do the laws against sexual assault not apply to strippers? To girlfriends? I don’t get that.

Nobody gets it. I was with friends. People I know, people I’ve known for all of high school and even before that. I should have been able to stand there buck naked and be safe.

Being noticed isn’t an open invitation to guys to do whatever they want to me.

** spoiler alert **
literally so many things to say i don’t even know where to start????

all of the adults are absolutely useless. i think i hated all of them except for grace’s mom and ian’s dad. there is no way her teachers could get away with treating her the way that they did. they would have been fired so fast. asking your student to come talk about the dangers of underage drinking only because she got sexually assaulted? refusing to defend her when she’s being harassed right in front of your face? every time a teacher “stood up” for grace, it was because she made them.

ian was a total asshat, and the most wishy-washy douchebag. one second he’s kissing grace in the middle of the hallway, and the next he’s asking her if her pizza will give him stds in front of the whole cafeteria? he shouldn’t have had to find a video on his friend’s phone to believe grace. she gave him plenty of reasons to believe her story was credible, and he still chose to tear her down every time he was in front of anyone else. how many times did his dad have to tell him to pull his head out of his ass?!?!

and frankly, i don’t know how there wasn’t some kind of assembly or come to jesus or parent communication about the way the kids in that high school were acting. zac posted child porn on his facebook, everyone knew about it, and there were no consequences. lindsay and miranda repeatedly threatened and verbally attacked grace IN FRONT OF ADULTS, and there were no consequences. the lacrosse team (what kind of podunk school IS this?) is a herd of cavemen and if MY high school football team had acted like that, they would have been suspended a long ass time ago.

and don’t even get me started on the burqa scene. that was embarrassing for both of us, patty blount.

I thought the main characters were both realistic and relatable. The way Ian changed after he realized his best friend had not only sa'ed Grace but also how he in general treats women around him opened him up to the harsh reality we live in. He had been blind for so long and now he couldn't unsee it anymore.

The writing style could have been better but regardless, the message in the book is a powerful and important one. It's a book that everyone should read.

What the hell, just what the hell was wrong with how I looked today? Why does he care if I wear eye-black like the football team? It's my face. It's my body. I can dress it up or down however I want. Why is that such a hard concept for guys to accept?

Some girls say no. Some boys don't listen. When Grace meets Ian, she's afraid. Afraid he'll reject her like the rest of the school, like her own family. After she accuses Zac, the town golden boy, of rape, everyone turns against her. Ian wouldn't be the first to call her a slut and a liar. Except Ian doesn't reject her. He's the one person who looks past the taunts and the names and the tough-girl act to see the real Grace. He's the one who gives her the courage to fight back. He's also Zac's best friend. "A bold and necessary look at an important, and very real, topic. Everyone should read this book." - Jennifer Brown, author of Thousand Words and Hate List A gut-wrenching, powerful love story told from alternating points of view by the acclaimed author of Send.

A very compelling read. I enjoyed reading it from both perspectives (albeit not Zac’s but still interesting to read from a boys perspective). It’s one of those where everyone should read it. At times it made me angry, as almost everyone believed the guy, even girls, and then I remembered this actually happens within our society and just made me angrier. So if you were to ever pick up another book, I recommend it be this one.
