I found myself incredibly intrigued by this book. When I started compiling a list of possible titles to offer for my students to choose from for their upcoming book club, I stumbled upon this one and decided to include it as both a way to broaden the scope and appeal to the majority Hispanic population of my class. I knew nothing about this period of history, specifically the Puerto Rican aspect. I knew of other things during the time period, of course, but not this one.
I will admit to longing for more depth to the prose of the novel. Much of the revelations come in tight, neat packages that both take your breath away and leave you dissatisfied at the same time. I will say that this book has awakened a desire in me to know more about this era and the struggles that the people living through it endured.
