2021’s most heartwarming love story

this is a screenplay for an early 00s romcom… not a book. it was like fine? it just felt so clear to me that this book was written specifically to be adapted into a movie (and it was according to google!) i HATE when authors say “we talked about everything and nothing” and they said this TWICE in like 300 pages. that eliminates all the tension and chemistry buildup that makes me want to root for this couple. i was not rooting for this couple at the end of it. i was rooting for their moms and their friends, not them. also the banter they did have about a banana.. was .. uncomfortable. idk it’s fine it’s fluffy, nothing happens. the end.

What a beautiful story from Sophie Cousens! 

Before delving into the possible change of love, we are immersed in Minnie's whirlwind birthday rituals (or lack there of as you'll soon find out) as we learn about the story of how she came into this world, and why she likes to hide away on her birthday every year! The first strong relationship we are introduced to is Minnie and her best friend Leila. Cousens portrays such a real friendship, as you see them go from doting on each other, to bickering like sisters! I love the banter between them and how there different personalities and characters bounce off of one another. We all need a Leila in our lives!

Then there's Quinn! They guy Minnie has grown up hating (even though she'd never met him!) and yet for some reason she can't help but feel drawn to him. I love how Cousens builds on their relationship throughout the story - it's not a simple, two people meet, fall in love and that's it. Watching their characters develop as individuals and their interactions with one another is pretty special. 

Cousens has also created some brilliant secondary characters in this story who are authentic and real and bring so much more to the overall pleasure in reading This Time Next Year. 

This story is filled with laughter, excitement and a great big dollop of romance! All in the most indulgent and beautiful way. 

Also... any movie producers out there, you need to snap this up!!! Quick!

I really enjoyed this one! It was just quirky and down-to-earth enough for me. Full of hilarious and endearing characters, with plenty of unlucky and laugh-out-loud moments. Not very steamy or spicy if that’s what you’re looking for in a romance novel, but personally I enjoyed that about this book. 

A rom-com set mostly around New Year’s (I finished it on New Year’s Day, perfect timing!) about luck, love, and friendship. Loved it :)

2.5⭐️. I kind of enjoyed this holiday romance. I liked the idea of the starcrossed lovers and the scenes that are brought on by the flashback year chapters. What fell short was that I became a little annoyed with Minnie constantly complaining about her name and jinx and other things when she could be “doing.”

Honestly, I was more invested in the side characters’ romance. Ian’s my favourite character at this point - case and point: ‘I want to be her Invincibility bubble. I want to shield her, let her live in that mode for the rest of her life if I can.’ 🥲 

Quinn and Minnie had their moments where I found it all cute and sweet but it just felt very drawn out at points and there were so many times where I was just thinking, “WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??!” This book was cute but I think the premise had set my expectations up to something different. Also, the sheer amount of second-hand embarrassment in this book 😳, like, come on, Minnie, surely you can act like some kind of semblance of a somewhat normal person for half a second or so? But apparently not. 

I will give it to Cousens though, there were genuinely times where this book made me laugh as well as the way she explored all the characters’ backstories. I’m just a simple bitch and wanted more of the main romance lol.

I loved this rom-com. It reminded me a bit of Josie Silver, in that it is sweet and touching, but tackles subjects of real-life, like anxiety, miscarriage, divorce, and family dynamics. This will be a story I return to each holiday season.

This time next year, this was cute and I got through it really quick but it's not a new favourite.
I loved Minnie but wasn't really infested into the romance like I would have liked to be.
It's cute bit I'd liked to have more of Minnie and Quinn and fell in love with them along the way. I felt like we just didn't get enough of them together, but this was a fun read and I look forward to reading more from this Author and giving her another go.

This book was... odd? I have a lot of feelings that I can't really unpack. It felt like so much was happening, but also nothing? I thought this would seem more like a One Day type story, but it wasn't and I think a huge part of the disappointment was the fact that there really wasn't much time spent on seeing Minnie and Quinn's 'bond'... we were always told and never shown anything. This book reads like a debut novel and I don't think I would pick something else up by this author. There was a feeling of inauthentic a lot of what I read which was probably why I had a hard time connecting with anyone.

This is cute. Very cute. Not a 5 star read, but a worthwhile read nonetheless! And even though it takes place over year (with flashbacks), it still has a distinct holiday read feel to it!

The good:

I liked pretty much every character. Everyone was fleshed out, the conflict was believable, no-one felt like a filler character. I liked Quinn and Minnie, I liked their parents, I liked the coworkers. I liked that there wasn't insta-love, and I loved seeing the feelings grow over the course of the year.

Didn't enjoy the brief time we spent in the "friend zone" with Minnie. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as the friend zone, and I wasn't a huge fan of the attitude that friendship is some kind of consolation prize. 

I think a greater conflict and better payoff would have been to see the struggle of both of them trying to stay just friends, rather than one random scene where Minnie just straight up asks "what are we?" Maybe I should be praising the mature communication, but, in a novel, it didn't make for a very satisfying release payoff.

Would have preferred to see them both skirt around the elephant in the room a bit more until the attraction could no longer be ignored. Maybe that's just me.

Also, maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I would have liked more of a resolution to all the missed meetings over new years! Maybe Quinn could have noticed Minnie's half built Millennium Falcon in her room when he was helping her move. Maybe he could have seen the photo of Minnie with the dog they both loved in India. Maybe Minnie could have realized he was at the restaurant the night she got fired. Small things that I feel would have been very satisfying for the reader.

All in all, a quick, nice read, full of holiday magic and warm and fuzzies.
