This book has a lot of Chess learning to trust herself and others. I don't think I realized before just how much character development happens here, sure there is still a lot of self-destructive moments that hurt you to see happen. I wouldn't expect it to just disappear overnight when Chess has so many deep-rooted issues to work on that effects her trust in people. However, this is the book she really becomes more self-aware and actually works to better herself. Also, getting to see her and Terrible in a relationship is everything and worth the wait!! Even if it's not always easy and there's a lot they need to work on too, it's just beautiful to experience it. This being Chess's first real relationship and also the first time being in love adds a lot of pressure, but I love her realization that what she has found is one of a kind and worth the effort and risk. Also, there is the introduction of Lex's sister Blue and the start of her and Chess's complicated friendship. Two and three are the major event books where this one is more building. That doesn't make it any less important because there are a lot of big events that happen especially at the very end that will have an impact going forward.

I don't think anything could diminish my high from book 3, but I will say this one is harder for me to get into because of the internal war Chess is constantly having in her head, and of course the drugs and over abusing of drugs doesn't help. Though, also seeing another side to the character despite the constant self-doubt really is refreshing and a great change of pace. Chess despite her flaws has really come a long way and it is incredibly rewarding to see sometimes and it also makes the moments she downslides that much harder to take. There are a lot of important things that happen in this book especially because of the way it ends and seeing the two gang rivalries start to shift. Also, Blue for me has a ton of presence, but yet I was surprised by learning that is almost entirely because of this book.
