A Matter of Temptation

Stacy Reid2022
Miss Wilhelmina “Mina” Crawford is desperate. Having been ruined in the eyes of society years ago for one foolish, starry-eyed mistake, she spends her days secreted away at her family’s crumbling estate, helping her brother manage the land but not able to truly live life the way she’s always dreamed. When her brother admits to just how dire their finances have gotten, she takes it upon herself to procure employment…but the only one who will even consider the scandalous idea of a female secretary is the brilliant, ruthless, and infuriating Earl of Creswick. Simon Loughton, the Earl of Creswick, needs help if he wants to finally pass the reform bill he’s been championing for years and secure the vote for England’s most vulnerable constituents. Too bad help comes in the form of a woman with breathtaking nerve, fiery red hair, and a sense of humor to match. Now temptation—disguised as a lovely, clever-mouthed devil—lives and works under Simon’s very roof. And Mina finally feels as though she’s truly living life to her wildest dreams. But even the most incendiary of kisses can’t incinerate Mina’s past…or the shocking secret that could ruin them both. 2.5 stars I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A Matter of Temptation focuses on Mina Crawford who, along with her twin brother, is in a bad way with money. When her brother's bad decision forces him to challenge the powerful Earl of Creswick to a duel, Mina decides to go under disguise in his place and win the duel herself. It's not long before the Earl, Simon, recognizes her and decides that she be his secretary. Being in such close proximity with Simon, Mina is faced with the decision to give in to her heart's desires or keep hold of a certain secret that could ruin everything. I won't lie, the first half of this book was actually pretty good! I loved their first meeting at the duel so much. Their chemistry was there and I was just very excited to see their romance grow as she started working for him. Unfortunately, that chemistry fizzled out quite quickly to me. I feel as though the attraction was too immediate which caused me to not really care about this couple. I didn't mind either character, but they surrendered to their attraction too soon for me to continue being invested in their relationship for the latter half of the book. I became bored quite quickly after they decided that they were interested in one another which just makes me question why I'm even reading what I'm reading lol. When interest in the romance is gone, all I had left was her scandal and the politics as a subplot, which just made everything even more boring. I just didn't care enough for this story overall. I was so excited to try another Stacy Reid, but I think that this one didn't work for me the way I wanted it to. Hopefully her next one interests me more!

I mostly picked this book up after I heard one person raving about a particular scene with Simon and an icy lake, and aside from that, I thought it was okay. It was my first book by Reid, and it didn't blow me away, but it wasn't terrible either. The writing was fine, but the pacing felt a little too slow. I did enjoy the characters and thought Mina and Simon were fun. I liked their banter and how Mina kept pushing Simon's buttons. She was spirited, and he was stuffy, but they worked so well together. I enjoyed watching Simon open up and become more vulnerable with her. It was very sweet. The ending and the conflict did wrap up rather quickly, but it was fine. I'm not sure how memorable this will be for me, but I liked it.

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read and review A Matter of Temptation by Stacy Reid! I loved this! It's all the things a good romance novel should be and then some! It was also well edited, and while you can tell that you author really likes the word lush, it was fun. It's just the sort of thing you can curl up with on a lazy evening and read. I normally only read romance on Kindle Unlimited, or the books that I get when they're available for free on Kindle, but I'm willing to pay money to read Stacy Reid romance novels. (I just bought one because I have poor impulse control)
