It is not a zero-sum game. There are things in the British tradition that have enriched my life. But history is not weighted on the scales, it is felt in our bones. It is worn on our skin. It is scarred in memory.

All this talk of colour and race is invented. Some people deemed White today were not considered White yesterday. The Irish, Greeks, some Hispanic people. We are not talking about a colour but an idea. It is an idea of power. For centuries power has been given a face, and that face is coloured White.

There are people who believe they are White, and there are the rest of us. who are told we are not. I can love people who believe they are White even as I cannot love Whiteness itself. They are trapped too. They are in their own maze of mirrors, where their reflection stares back at them as creation. The world is their own creation. Everything in their image. But they are doomed. The Greeks told us that. Narcissus spurned all but his own reflection, the love of himself that could not be returned, and he melted away. The of Whiteness. Many of the people who speak to me rest of us remain an echo in the forest.

There is nothing in the hue of a person's skin that creates segregation and suffering; it happens when people act on ideas about that skin colour. Racecraft turns the consequence - imagined colour - into the cause: an individual is discriminated against because they are perceived as Black, not because of the actions of another.

There were no races before racism made them so. Race is a fiction. But racism is real. It is lethal. It is cruel. It refuses to die. Race is superstition. Racism is criminal intent.
