I stare at Hazel, and she stares back at me. In our gazes, we’re having a full conversation.

I draw her closer. Something has shifted in my chest, locked into place. This is right. This is the way it’s supposed to be. I thought about her for all those years, and we found our way back to each other.

I love her. The words are right under my vocal cords, but I hold them back, because this is all so new. They beat through my blood, they weave through my heart, and I’m sure they’re written all over my face.

He’s right, I realize. All I do is think about the past, and it’s holding me back.
