This book felt so...unhappy, but not in a moody or gothic way. Especially Mary Shelley's chapters. It was like an endless cycle of misery, and this repetitiveness also caused this book to drag and be somewhat boring. Mary Wollstonecraft's POV chapters were better, but also tended to be boring and slow.

I also had high hopes this book would be good for a fall/spooky season read, but it really wasn't. It didn't focus too much on the writing of Frankenstein, and, except for the very end, this book just left me feeling depressed. I learned a lot about these two women. I know some reviewers are upset the author changed so many historical facts or left out and merged characters, but it didn't bother me. I always appreciate author's notes, and this was no exception.

I felt the author tried to make this book more atmospheric, and there is some beautiful writing throughout. But overall it wasn't that exciting.

Mary Wollstonecraft felt like a vibrant character while her daughter didn't seem so three-dimensional. I enjoyed the romance at the end of the book, but so much focusing on the bloody French Revolution really took me by surprise.

There just doesn't feel to be much substance or depth; everything is surface level where I felt the author could have dug deeper. She may have tried to hard to fit everything in where this could have worked better as a duology. I'm learning that dual or multiple POV/timeline books aren't really for me.
