The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella (Twilight Saga)

An Eclipse Novella

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Twilight Saga)

I didn’t know that Meyer had created more to the Twilight Saga when I originally read the series so I went and started it all again with the intention of checking out the additions. Although I probably should have read this one right after eclipse since it follows that storyline.

I thoroughly enjoyed this side story about Bree Tanner and the rest of the newborn vamps. Knowing that her story ends in tragedy made me doubt that I would get anything out of it but she had lots of personality. The perspective of the newborns was interesting. Bree mentions the thirst and the burning urge to feed often so it was surprising to hear her thoughts when confronted with Bella. How she so badly wanted it but tried to gain control as a newborn was impressive. Bree was so observant and could read expressions on faces so well that it made her death feel far more tragic than it came across in Eclipse.

Bree was so young and had just found herself a friend in Fred, who was also a really neat character in this side story. I would have loved to read more about him if ever there was an opportunity. She had also just discovered she loved Diego and there could have been more on that had he not suffered from the same fate.

I turned off my brain. It was time to hunt. I took a deep breath, drawing in the scent of the blood inside the humans below. They weren't the only humans around, but they were the closest. Who you were going to hunt was the kind of decision you had to make before you scented your prey. It was too late now to choose anything. Bree Tanner can barely remember life before she had uncannily powerful sense, superhuman reflexes and unstoppable physical strength. Life before she had a relentless thirst for blood. . .life before she became a vampire. All Bree knows is that living with her fellow newborns has few certainties and even fewer rules: watch you back, don't draw attention to yourself and, above all, make it home by sunrise or die. What she doesn't know: her time as an immortal is quickly running out. Then Bree finds an unexpected friend in Diego, a newborn just as curious as Bree about their mysterious creator, whom they know only as her. As they come to realize that the newborns are pawns in a game larger than anything they could've imagined, Bree and Diego must choose sides and decided whom to trust. But when everything you know about vampires is based on a lie, how do you find the truth? In an irresistible combination of danger, mystery and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan in the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

I'm quite grateful that Stephenie Meyer released this novella for it is a pleasure to discover that this vampire world does not (or did not, whatever) revolve around Bella & Edward alone.

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion. 'I'm as surprised as anyone about this novella,' said Stephenie Meyer. 'When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.

This novella wasn’t it.
I missed a lot of things, like chapters where were they. The whole book is one big chapter it seemed and it’s so confusing because you can’t stop reading at one point.
The story had not caught my attention. Although I thought Bree was cute and smart but of course not smart enough. I didn’t really care for her backstory.
We all knew how it ended if you read eclipse.
There was one thing interesting about it, how someone else besides the cullens and Bella saw the cullens what they looked like to the outsiders that one part was interesting.
But this book wasn’t it, I didn’t want to give it one star it wasn’t that bad. 2 stars is just a bad book.

Almost love this more than some of the regular Twilight books. The characters were very interesting.

This book is so sad ): it's such a great (sorta) spin off of the Twilight series and Stephanie Meyer was still at her prime when she wrote this. It's a sweet, simple, short story about Bree and her short immortal life as a vampire. Basically, Twilight is the long romantic novel you love and adore while this book is the one with the inevitable, sad ending you don't want to have happen but know is coming ): great read though!! <3

The last 30 pages! It was so hard to read them. The realization about death and betrayal by her leader! I really didn't think too much of Cullens trying to protect her during the eclipse novel but reading through her prospective made me realize how rare it is among vampires to expect such behaviour and how this makes Cullens really THE BEST vampire family to exist! I also love how she shines through with confidence and power during her final moments. I really would like to know her story in an alternate universe where she could live and learn this new way of life with Cullens.

(If you haven't read Eclipse, I don't recommend reading this first.)

this was such a good novella for the twilight series. it’s the story of bree tanner who we met briefly in the eclipse book. i felt for her so much and i loved how stephanie meyer wanted to write this book to give people an idea of what edward, bella and company look like to outsiders.
this novella did make me cry and you got to see the twilight series from a young newborn vampire’s perspective which was a really good insight.

** spoiler alert **
7-ish years after reading the Twilight saga I finally decided to read this novella thanks to a friend. Obviously going into this story I knew ~ basically~ everyone would die but I still wanted more from this world and these characters. This side of the story was so amazing to read and I honestly think that these 178 pages were better than the original 4 books combined....oops.

I love Bree Tanner as a character. I never actually noticed her in the books until I read this book and I had to go back and re-read all of the Twilight Saga to find her and I was disappointed to find she wasn't a character of any importance.
