Doctor Who: the Stealers of Dreams

Doctor Who: the Stealers of Dreams

Steve Lyons2014
In the far future, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack find a world on which fiction has been outlawed. A world where it's a crime to tell stories, a crime to lie, a crime to hope, and a crime to dream. But now somebody is challenging the status quo. A pirate TV station urges people to fight back. And the Doctor wants to help until he sees how easily dreams can turn into nightmares. With one of his companions stalked by shadows and the other committed to an asylum, the Doctor is forced to admit that fiction can be dangerous after all. Though perhaps it is not as deadly as the truth. Featuring the Ninth Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston, together with Rose and Captain Jack as played by Billie Piper and John Barrowman in the hit Doctor Who series from BBC Television.

7/10 pretty good! Dialogue is solid, a nice moody ambience inhabits the whole piece, the history bits add to the unique feel of the story, and I appreciate the limited stage of the setting. Plus, trains! Who doesn’t love trains? Coming off the back of a run of nu-who big finish, this is a refreshing reminder of the limitless potential of Doctor Who for stories. This smaller more intimate drama is just as impactful (if not more so) then some of the other overly ambitious Big Finish I’ve listened to, and I much prefer the smaller stage if I’m honest. There’s something much more “grand” felt when exploring the universal humanity of fictional characters within a tight sci-fi setting, when compared to the large scale but depthless cliches of other Who sci fi worlds That said, the story didn’t wow me (not that I needed to), and I was able to predict the twist, but despite not reaching the stars the story easily held my attention all the way through. I like good character work and this did well on that front. Definitely recommend. Got it as a freebie and am interested in picking up the rest of the set now.
