Overall god but the ending was kind of mediocre

A chilling read! The plot was complex and terrifying at the same time. Despite not being on board with the voice actor initially, I slowly got into the narration once the horror started. At first, I found his narration of conversation, especially Faye's voice, too annoying but with time, he changed the voice he used for her so I was satisfied. What had me was his narration of the lines of the entity, he did a terrific job! The narration of the children's song gave me goosebumps. I believe the narration is partly responsible for my high rating as I felt frightened listening to all the stolen tongues. Based solely on the emotions the narrator displayed while reading, I felt like I was part of the experience, going through the same as Felix. I'm not usually a fan of endings where some questions are left unanswered, but it was done masterfully so I didn't mind. You can tell when an author leaves questions unanswered as an artistic choice instead of simply giving up or not thinking the ending through.

bro really wrote a whole essay about how natives deserve to be portrayed as fully, fleshed out characters then kills off the two side native characters that were there only to serve as spiritual guidance and lore dumps. fuck off 🙄

Recommend for a quick spooky read! It is only about 300 pages. I really enjoyed this book and found myself gasping or covering my mouth at a few scenes. I think it struck me particularly hard because I also happen to live in the middle of nowhere (kind of like the setting in the book). My rating stems from the fact that while I did like the book, I wanted more from the ending than what I got and there were a few scenes that I felt made the book longer than need be.

I think this made for a really compelling and terrifying read. It's a solid creature feature while also reminding me a lot of home invasion stories like The Strangers. It is not particularly gorey, so if you're squeamish about lots of blood or gore, but still want a book that has some, I'd recommend this one.

** spoiler alert **
           This book was so creepy and fun. There were moments I threw my kindle away from my face I was so freaked out. The main characters were interesting, sometimes the male mc treated his fiancé like she was a child.. I've read too many fucked up thrillers and was like "is the fiancé even real or is she an imagined version of his childhood?" lol The only reason this isn't getting 5 stars from me, is due to how it's all resolved. Spoiler below, you are warned.


She figures out "what 5 means" (which was dumb but whatever).. then she tells the demon/monster to go away and it.. does? For something that was so menacing the entire book, it felt a little meh.

Also to note, my partner has been informed that if he ever did ANY OF THE THINGS FAYE DID IN HER SLEEP I would leave him. He could just be eaten up by the hollow man. Bye bye, see ya later. lol

Still would highly recommend for anyone who wants to read a real spooky book.

I can see why people like this novel, but in my opinion it’s overrated

2.25 Stars. Only because the setup was SO good, and the spooky vibes were immaculate till about 60% of the book.

While this book had the best prologue I have ever seen, it could not consistently hold my attention. The middle part of the book went on for too long with things happening repeatedly and the climax was lukewarm. 

I thought the book could have been cut in half instead of describing almost every single day of their lives. For e.g., why wasn't Felix more scared about Faye being possessed? I mean, I would've run as soon as she started creepily smiling. Sure, she has a history of sleepwalking but there's a limit to how much she can do creepy things in her sleep. Why didn't they seek help earlier? Oh, to talk about it for 100 more pages with no development, that's why!

The parents were such pathological liars. Your daughter is in danger, and you are still lying! Once is fine, you are creating a sense of mystery. Twice is okay, you are pushing people slide to the edge of their seats. But four times! And it wasn't even a great secret that they were keeping. Apparently, only Faye can't know, so tell Felix!?! All the interactions with the parents irked me to no end.

And even Becca's visit; what did that add to the plot other than her acting dumb, putting her baby in danger when she KNOWS her sister might be possessed, and her REFUSING to tell Felix what's going on so he can help her sister. 

Nathan and Tiwe were the best characters in this book and of course they had depressing endings. 

I wish the book wasn't so repetitive with its possession occurrences and rather had given a solution sooner. I also thought the essence of the secret they held made very little sense and wasn't monumental a reason to be possessed by. I was expecting something incredibly dark considering the setup of the plot and was pretty let down by most of the ending.

Friends, it has happened. It’s finally happened! After months and months of disappointment, I’ve found a horror story that satisfies.

This story started out as a winning entry to a contest put on by Reddit’s horror community, NoSleep. I like that. It even makes sense to me. Scoff if you will, but the thing about online communities like NoSleep and Creepypastas and all that- they are basically the urban legends of today, and urban legends are all about storytelling. Sticking to the spirit of the oral tradition, performing stories, all of that awesomeness. 

That’s what sets Stolen Tongues apart from every. other. novel. I’ve read this year that markets itself primarily, if not, solely, as “horror”. Blackwell did not cop out and rely on the gross out factor or on gore. He did not go for shock value above story [which is my chief complaint about the other horror novels I’ve read this year]. He focused on building and maintaining an oppressively creepy atmosphere. He focused on telling a damn story. I cannot stress how freaking sick I am of picking up a horror novel, only to read buckets of gore and gross, with a side of outrageous, “designed to make you uncomfortable” sexual deviancy. That. is. not. horror. in my mind. It does not. freaking. scare. me. You know what it does do? Make me seriously question whether or not the author can even tell a story. I read horror to be terrified, not to feel as if I might get nauseous. 

Stolen Tongues was scary. So scary! And fun, oh so very fun. I don’t know how many times I stopped reading to fill my husband in on the story, so we could agree that “they are so fucked”. Like… dude. Seriously, this book is freaking it! 

The best thing about Stolen Tongues? It’s a good scare with a deeper meaning. At the core of it, this is a story about loss and grief, and how we choose to deal with our grief.

This freaking book. I don’t think I’ve ever been so terrified reading a book before. This was a rare one that was scary from beginning to end. I really liked how it wrapped up as well. Felix Blackwell you are a genius!
