Yeah, I read this book back in high school and DNF'ed the third in the series, and since I know I'm not gonna care about the third book now, I don't really need to care about this one either. 

Not to say this is a bad book, necessarily. I really enjoyed it when I read it when I was younger. However, at this point, I really just didn't like the shift in focus from Thirrin and her allies to her son and his struggles. 

But if you're 12, or looking for a book targeted towards 12-year-olds, this is a fine book! Charlemagne is disabled, but throughout this book learns to compensate for his disability by incorporating practices and techniques from other cultures, and his allies are, I would say, on par with Thirrin's allies, in terms of readability. The only thing I really dislike about this book is Medea--she's just very poorly motivated. 

Not for me, at least not right now.
