Bought it when it was on sale but worth full price. A hilarious look at white culture. I'm recommending this to all my friends.

Pointless. It mocks a certain small, ridiculous group - C21st upper-middle-class lefty American hipsters -and ignores the rest of its titular target. What does it mean to say that The Wire, green tea, or public transport are white things? Not that they're not for other people. Not that most whites like them (they don't). Not that they're bad. Not that they're good. The point is to mock pretentious people, whose contempt for practicality, and idiot love of anything which calls itself authentic or nonmainstream, are very fun to bash. Mere socially acceptable stereotyping; the site exists to let people chortle and roll their eyes, get revenge on ponces.

But if you're interested in mocking that group you already knew what the fads are, so you and Lander are just patting each other on the back, or, rather, reaching around.

Insofar as it encourages self-consciousness among accidentally-consumerist hipsters: ok. Insofar as it sneers at trends that actually could change the world if adopted en masse (e.g. vegetarianism, cycling, taking the fucking train), go away.

Probably not this book. The blog from which it grew however; yes, I'm all over that like organic groceries at the niche music festival I went to with my black mates when I got back from living in Japan.

The book tells us that the #1 thing white people like is the mix of humour and embarrassment to be felt when realising that the things they hold as quirky or unique, are in fact pretty much everyone elses unique quirk too.

Stuff White People Like was born out of a conversation between the author and a friend - they were watching The Wire and ended up discussing what people who weren't watching the show would be doing instead. This book is a compilation of 150 of those things.

Christian Lander writes well, he doesn't force his style on you, he keeps it simple and has a natural humour - that's what holds the book together. Written by anyone else it would come across like a collection of bland facts or someones idea of mass psychological analyses.

Some of the 'entries' are very funny, and you're guaranteed to have more than one 'Oh my god I do that' moment. Equally interesting are the comments his blog entries get. Go and check that out for yourself.
