Twelve-year-old Wood Rye has diabetes, but convinces his friend Ulysses Jackson that the doctors have misdiagnosed him. With Jackson's help, he runs away from the hospital and hides in a forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There, he battles with both his illness and the harsh wilderness in a struggle that could cost him his life.
