One of my favs!

Jessica Day George so far has not failed to impress me. As a girl who loves the Princesses of Westfalin trilogy enough to consider it in my top three book series of all time this book was a pleasant surprise! Her writing style really is simple and fun to read! I love that there are pronunciation guides otherwise I’d be so lost on how to say most of these words but altogether this was 100% a wonderful book and I’m so glad I was finally able to finish it 😂💕 can’t wait to read more of her work!!

such a cute book! apparently, being a middle grade one, it lacks much drama - but it has a girl talking to animals and being friends with a wolf. so whatever, i'm in!

I utterly adored this book! I'm pretty much on a mission to read every one of Jessica Day George's books because the ones I've already read have become instant favorites. This book was absolutely captivating! Even though I knew the fairy tale already, I was surprised on more than one occasion. The writing and characters are amazing! I mean, it's really just all amazing! One thing that really impressed me was the way Rollo was written. Rollo is the lass's pet wolf and (view spoiler)[ she can understand him as well as every other animal (hide spoiler)]. I have read books and seen movies where you get to hear what the animal sidekick has to say and I usually don't like it. I generally prefer it when they communicate in ways other than words - i.e. Maximus and Pascal in Disney's Tangled. But, even that can easily become annoying. Some people try too hard to make the animal friend act like a relatable human character which I find odd and distracting. Some make the animal stupid with no logic or real emotion so there's really no point in even having them talk. Jessica Day George did a fantastic job however. Rollo was very clearly a wolf but he was also smart and could carry out a conversation. He was funny but in a natural way. I just really enjoyed reading his thoughts. Another thing I loved was the lass's selflessness. A lot of stories today are about girls who are "strong willed," "role model material,"and "spunky" among many other things. I actually find that boring and irritating. But then, if the character is sweet and kind, she'll usually either change and become "stronger" later on or it'll just be really forced and the only reason we as the readers know that she's sweet is the we've been told again and again. There were comments made about the lass's selflessness but it was mostly just a very clear part of who she was. Did she always make the right and perfectly selfness decisions? No. She was written as a real human being who makes mistakes. I think that's why I love Jessica Day George so much. She writes amazing characters! And don't even get me started on how much I adored Hans Peter! He was my favorite character. I could go on for ages! I'm just going to cut it short by saying that he has earned a place on my list of "fictional older brothers who I totally love." The ending made me soooo happy! (view spoiler)[Hans Peter and Tova were reunited! The lass and Asher were so adorable together! (hide spoiler)]

I loved it! So... fairy tale like!
