I’m reading this book at a very turbulent time in my life. I’m faced with this idea of what I could be and what I can do as I’m torn about who I am. From the perspective of this book, you’ll be able to understand your mother more, especially if y’all don’t look the same. There’s so much fear, pain, and join that comes from the pride you gain after investing in the wellbeing of another. 

However, I am Greentop and I suffer from knowing I’m different but wanting to find someplace I belong. A place like that does not necessarily exist for me in the same way it does for him (since he is a mallard at his core) but one can hope to find solace in the idea that the only person who has truly understood him is his mother.

This is little book with a bitter-sweet story. We meet Sprout, a laying hen locked up in a coop, who some day finds a way to escape. Once free, she will finally be able to make her dream of hatching her own eggs and see the birth of her little chicks. At first glance, this plot might seem similar to children's books but this short novel touches upon many deep themes, such as freedom, motherhood, sacrifice, the pursuit of one's dreams and the brutality of the world we live in underlying all this. The ending got me particularly emotional. Overall, I enjoyed this reading very much and was not expecting it to be so impactful.
