What I loved most about this book is the way it explores generational trauma—how it lingers, festers, and, in this story, literally manifests as a ghost that haunts you for life. There’s something so powerful about the idea that you’re never truly free, never truly living, until you confront the pain and trauma you’ve buried. The writing is also incredibly accessible—easy to follow while still being emotionally impactful. And I always appreciate when authors incorporate native languages and local slang into their stories because it makes the world feel so much more authentic. Growing up watching Hong Kong dramas, reading this felt oddly nostalgic for me. And the plot twist??? Oh, it got me GOOD. The shift from third-person to second-person POV was such a genius move. The way the author plays with prose and structure to enhance the story was genuinely so impressive, and it made the reveal hit even harder. Beyond the horror and mystery elements, this book is also a fascinating exploration of Hong Kong’s history and culture, especially with references to the Kowloon Walled City and the Hungry Ghost Festival.
