I didn't like this one as much as the first one, mainly because there were some really strange, really out-of-character moments that didn't make sense (view spoiler)[particulary when Alex threatened to starve Julie. Again, it was weird to reread a book like this in this situation, but I still really enjoyed this one. I wasn't a huge fan of Alex, cuz he kind of an ass to his sisters. I mean sure sometimes Julie was being dumb as well, but come on dude. (hide spoiler)] Honestly, I'd be fine if this book was the end of the series because personally I didn't love the two books that came after this one.

I'm really liking these books, not quite a series, but such a well told story. The moon gets knocked out of its orbit and causes a dark and stormy apocalyptic weather changes that make life near impossible for living. This time the story is set in NYC and Alex has to look after his 2 sisters after his parents go missing. Everyone is so good and while there is a lot of Catholicism and god talk, it didn't feel preachy. Highly enjoyable, 4.5 stars.

I didn't even realise there was a book that came before this, but it obviously doesn't seem to matter because I thought this book was great. It was really interesting, and you really felt for the lead character and his family. Some parts were so unbelievably sad while others were just downright scary. It was a great book and now I'm going to seek out the first one!

Aprés un premier tome plus que prométeur j'ai décidé d'enchainer directement avec le deuxième. Si dans Au Commencement on suivait l'histoire de la jeune Miranda et de sa famille dans une petite ville perdu du Sud des Etats Unis, ici nous suivons Alex, jeune adolescent de 17 ans, et de ses deux petites soeurs. On reprend l'histoire du début, au moment de l'impact de la météorite sur la lune, et re-découvrons la tragédie du point de vue de New York (si on se rappelle bien, dans le premier tome on nous avait annoncé que la ville entière de new York avait été submergée par les eaux). 

Je dois avouer qu'il était assez frustrant au début de tout recommencer en suivant d'autres personnages qui nous sont complètement inconnus. Mais malgré tout l'auteur a reussi à éviter un sentiment de déjà-vu chez le lecteur, les faits se déroulent de manière complètement différente. Nos nouveaux héros sont loins d'être aussi préparés à une telle catastrophe comme c'était le cas pour la famille de Miranda, de plus ici les adolescents sont laissés seuls à eux-mêmes dés le début, alors que Miranda, elle, est entourée tout le long par des adultes (avec sa famille presque au complet), l'ambiance et la situation sont assez différentes, suffisament en tout cas pour ne pas ennuyer le lecteur. 

Malgré que l'on suive exclusivement des "enfants" dans ce tome, les thèmes sont beaucoup plus adultes et dures, par exemple on y fait souvent allusion à la prostitution, au dépouillage de cadavres voir même au canibalisme. New York étant une ville beaucoup plus grande que celle où Miranda vit (je ne sais plus son nom), les évènements sont vécus différament. Il y a une vraie guerre pour la survie, et il ne s'agit pas seulement de trouver de la nourriture mais aussi de se défendre de la population de New York plus que prête à tout pour survivre. 

L'histoire n'est plus narrée comme un journal intime mais reste à la 1ère personne. Nous suivons tout du point de vue du narrateur Alex. Et même si il m'a été plus difficle pour moi de m'identifier à lui comme je l'avais fait avec Miranda, au fil des pages on en vient à s'y attacher. En tant qu'aîné il est devenu responsable de ses deux jeunes soeurs et on sent à quel point il est prêt à tout pour les préserver. Les thèmes de la famille et de la préservation sont aussi présents que dans le 1er tome, et même si on a de temps en temps trés envie de secouer les personnages on s'attache à chacun d'entre eux, ils sont loin d'être parfait mais c'est bien ce qui fait leur charme, ils nous resemblent.

Pas de doute, aprés un début un peu plus lent (malgré qu'il commence directement par l'impact), j'ai une fois de plus adoré. Même si l'univers ne nous est plus étranger et qu'on a un sentiment de retour en arrière, l'auteur réussi tout de même à nous surprendre tout le long du livre en explorant des thèmes mis de côté dans le premier tome. Je considère pour ma part ce tome aussi bon que le premier et je l'ai fini d'une traite avec beaucoup d'émotion comme ce dernier.

While the first book in this series took place from the viewpoint of Miranda, in this book we’re introduced to Alex who also has to make hard decisions, especially in the wake of great family tragedy. The story takes place in New York, which we were told in the first book was massively devastated when the moon was knocked closer to Earth. The book is not so much a sequel to the first book, but more of a companion as it takes place at the same time as the events in the first book. I thought the characters were wonderfully well developed, even down to some of the minute side characters. The plot development and pacing were so well done. I finished the book in a matter of days and I craved more from the book. You can tell the author is also a master at words as she was able to make the book, in the same format as the first, sound so much different but still entertaining at the same time.

The only thing I felt was weird was that while the book was still in diary format, the book was not. Alex didn’t journal and the book was from third person perspective, but the diary format in the first book was from first person perspective. It made the book a little funny to read, but it was great to follow along the days that way. I got used to the format after awhile as it didn’t have any real impact on the writing overall.

Verdict: If you like dystopian/post-apocalyptic books then this is a must-read for you.

I went to a used bookstore to get The World We Live in< (IN PAPERBACK TO MATCH THE OTHERS) even though I have it in hardback I can’t destroy the matching spines > and I had seen the paperback there before !! actually I saw two copies . Yet
