When you've been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town.

As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Sunrise on the Reaping

i already knew what was going to happen to haymitch going in, but reading it in a fully fleshed out, detailed, and graphic plot just broke my heart. part of me still hoped for a happy ending, even though i knew it would not happen, and that's what makes his story so impactful.

It was so fucking heartbreaking but I genuinely think it changed me. The takes in this that you can draw lines to in our world? Oh my god and honestly I just can’t, I loved it so much definitely a must read!

IS THE HAYMITCH THE SAME OF A DUPE?

ITS ALWAYS THE GOVERNMENT...

sunrise on the reaping is definitely faster paced book compared to the ballad of songbirds and snakes, seeing that we are plunged into familiar territory of the horror and ceremonial fanfare that surround the games that we know from the original trilogy. the book does provide a deeper insight into why haymitch the way he is when we first meet him in ‘the hunger games’. he loved so much and then he lost immensely in a short period of time, leaving him bereft and a shell of a person. we already know from the original trilogy of his victory in the games rings hollow but this book shows us on how he won the games and it was not by his wits alone. the games are as harrowing as before yet through haymitch’s perspective, there is sliver of hope that keep one on the edge, even though we know that it is ultimately futile. and yet, we still hope.

sunrise on the reaping adds another layer to the tapestry of the hunger games world weaved by suzanne collins, demonstrating how the planted seed of revolution takes time for it to bear any fruit.

I rewatched the first movie after finishing this and bawled from the start

First time reading an HG book (watched the movies but never crossed the path) and I was absolutely blown away

The beginning was kinda hard to get in bcs it wasn't the type of books I use to read but damn the characters development are crazy

Also can we talk about the way even if u think u know the end , you are still completely chocked, atleast I was

I would always recommend but probably would never read it again

At first, the beginning of the book felt so slow, but looking back, it was all the more detail to break my heart at the end. It was a fantastic read and something I will revisit. Definitely left me in tears at the end.

on the brighter side haymitch’s humor is unlike anything he had me laughing all the time but the amount of pain they put him through just makes me realize how cruel and unfair the world was to him 😔
