I first heard about Svetlana Alexievich when I was on my way back to Kiev, returning from my Chernobyl trip, and just got the chance to read this book. It is a very well-written book, in a quite different format that I wasn't used to. It was staggering to be honest, and I experienced a weird feeling along the way, a feeling of wishing to throw the book away and being curious about what's on the next page. So I kept reading, and I'm glad that I did. She did a really good job of reflecting a disastrous incident, a trauma that affected so many. And along the way, multiple times, I just wished that every country has a writer with the capabilities of Alexievich, so that way, more and more of these unfortunate memories would come up to the public and hopefully make us to question our past.

I don't know whether this review will help to any readers, but I had the unbearable urge to write it anyway.

A side note: I read this book after I visited the incident place, and I think it helped me to gain more perspective over the topic. But reading it before visiting the place sounds like a more sensible idea to me. Hope this helps.
