While being wildly contrived in the past, it’s true that it’s all just made up anyways. I recently finished The Once and Future King and so many stupid, bat-shit crazy things happen, sometimes White just breaks the fourth wall to say like who knows this doesn’t make sense, just roll with it. (Though I think some of the contrivances are internal consistencies that nagged me sometimes.)

What boosted it up to a 4 star is some pretty damn cool subversions near the end, and if that hadn’t clinched it, I think Nimue would have. 

TLDR: It’s a fun, weird, wild, inclusive read.

this book is unique. its characters are like no other you’ve seen before, they have such strong will and ethics that impact the story all throughout. the story’s end is so impactful and unpredictable. would very much recommend if you are looking for a thrilling read

Well that was just as satisfying as I hoped. 

I’ll admit it took me a very short time to get about 65% through and then about two days to finish just because I didn’t want it to end.

Oh, oh, oh! I'M SHOOK. I'm hooked. I'm still completely enamored with this series. I'm floating in space and reaching for the stars. Do you get the idea? Ah! Once & Future's highly anticipated sequel, Sword in the Stars, is nearly here--and ready to take you on an adventure, in these bleak and uncertain times. 

My advice to you? 

Pick up the Once & Future books while we head full force at our future of temporarily social distancing and potential lockdowns. They are a good source of entertainment. And we could all use a little escapism at this point. That being said: back to the actual review of Sword in the Stars! 

I was somehow both hesitant and excited about Sword in the Stars because I loved Once & Future so very much and sometimes, sometimes, sequels lack the same essence of their predecessor. Fortunately readers will be treated to a similar form of entertainment and exhilaration within the pages of Sword in the Stars. 

While, at times, the writing felt drastically different than what we saw in Once & Future, the sequel still had an abundance of thrills, laughter, familiarity, newness and that purely addictive quality we'd come to expect. As always, Capetta and McCarthy weave a delectable and dive story together in little to no time--captivating their audience and leading them on an adventure of a lifetime; proving to us that they are truly a dynamic duo. 

Sword in the Stars is an action-packed, humorous, diverse, time-hopping take on a classic tale. Much like its predecessor, this story remains on the path of taking what is familiar and turning it into a new tale. Full of intensity, uniqueness, and fast paced plotlines, this novel is a true adventure and a highly engaging ending to a dazzling duology. 

Much like with Once & Future, Sword in the Stars is impossible to put down and is the very definition of one-sitting-read. With representation (!) for days and a delightful spin on the Arthurian Legend, you can't go wrong. You should be reading this duology. Like, now. Capetta and McCarthy are doing what so many other's should be doing--and I'm forever here for it.

Sword in the Stars is honestly one of the best books I've ever read. This duology was such an enjoyable read and I loved the entire main cast of characters, everyone has an important role in the story. There were plenty of unexpected twists that shocked me in a good way and I was absolutely delighted with the ending. The two main couples were such a joy to read and my queer heart desperately needs more books like this. Ari had so much depth to her and I loved her all the way through. Merlin was an extremely complex character who did some bad things in his life and also went through a lot of awful stuff, but in the end he was such a wonderful character with a heart of gold. I can't talk about all of the characters because I'll be here forever but they are such a great little family of misfits. The story was a great combination of Arthurian history and a relatable plot about the Mercer company taking over the world, and Mercer kind of reminded me of Amazon. I loved the little slices of revolution throughout the story, every good story needs a revolution and a dash of hope, and Sword in the Stars certainly delivered.
