We don't need to pass down bad love like a family heir-loom, James says softly. From father to son to son to son. There's no value left in it. Every time you are loved, you get to choose whether you will pass that same love to someone else. I didn't need the kind of love my father gave me. The kind of fear and shame. I left it behind. And I made a new kind of love. A love of patience. The kind that I craved when I was small. I crafted it carefully out of the few and finite comforting memories I have of my father, and this new love, this is what I gave to Felicity. It isn't a perfect love, but it is better than what I got, and she gets to decide what parts of it she will give to Isaiah, and what parts she will leave behind. And Isaiah will never have to see that original, painful love.
