The Godwhale

Bass takes a unique and fascinating approach to the hard sciences as well as the human experience in this work. The characters are interesting in that they have personality flaws that many or most readers would find discomforting at best and horrifying at worst, yet their noble (if partly self-serving) aspirations combine with these flaws to make for a page-turning story that throws the reader's own morality into a conflict with that of the characters. The plot progressed a bit fast for my taste in the second half of the book, and the heavy use of scientific (-fictional) concepts was a bit hard to get through, but it's still an addictive read.
