As always, a pleasure to spend time with Alex Easton; this was more fairy-tale than horror (tl;dr, the folktale is real), and Kingfisher continues to be the only horror author I can cope with.

You can always rely on T. Kingfisher to give you a cosy creepy story. The cast of characters is colourful as ever.

I felt that the parallels between Alex's own (what is clearly) PTSD and the moroi. It was a clever and direct reference to a long history of explaining mental illness / struggles through folklore and help introduce an element of uncertainty whether the spirit was also torturing Alex or it was their own mental health.
