“I can’t bear to look at her,” he breathed.

As if he could possibly hold an appetite while being forced to watch, on his own wedding day, as another man touched his wife, danced with his wife, made plans to wed and bed his wife. How much more would he be expected to survive?

He loved her. He would kill for her, would soon die for her, and yet he knew he had no right to want her.

“I will say this once, angel, for I feel you should be warned. No man alive has ever loved a woman the way that I love you, and I would rather die, damned as I am, than disgrace us both with the pitiful, unrequited performance of my heart.”

“Angel,” he breathed. “You saved me.”

“Thank you,” he said softly, his eyes closing. “Thank you.”

Cyrus didn’t want to sully the essence of her with the smear of him, didn’t want her anywhere near the rotted breath pressing up against his senses, diffusing across his skin—

“We took your soul and stained it,” the devil whispered, “rinsed it with blood and debt. We took your mind and claimed it, chained it with regret—”

“Get out,” Cyrus said desperately. “Get away from me—”

“Your heart we broke for pleasure,” Iblees went on, “our reasons remain our own. All these years of rage and silence, all these centuries alone—”

“Forgive me, Your Majesty,” Hazan said quietly. “I shouldn’t have advised you to stay away.”

“Hazan,” he heard her whisper. There was a rare edge of fury in her voice. “Get out.”

Killing Cyrus was no longer an option but an inevitability. The blood oath had entered them into an inescapable contract that bound them both in a brutal finish.

When she finally ended his life, she knew she’d sever something essential in her soul. When he died, he’d take a part of her with him.

Every spectator would leave here today with memory as currency: an anecdote to share as evidence that they’d been present at an event that might alter the realms forever.

 Cyrus wished he might live to see that day.

“What do you want from me?” he shouted. “What more can I give you? What more will you demand of me? Was my kingdom not enough? Was my blood not enough?”

“Do you need to take from me my dignity, my privacy, the very thoughts still forming in my head? Take my eyes. Take my hands. Take the breath from my body. Strip the skin from my bones. Were I able to offer you my soul I would; I’d tear it from my flesh this moment and give it to you—”

“Never leave your queen unguarded, you fool.”

Alizeh laughed at this, and Cyrus looked up like a wrenched marionette, magnetized to the sound. He waited to see if she would laugh again. Instead, she sighed, and he withered.

How could he not feel unworthy? She was a luminous hope in the lives of millions— while he dragged his dead corpse through the blossoming valley of her life, staining everything with his blood.

“Then pray do not complicate the situation further. Do not take from me what you cannot offer me in return. You need not ruin me utterly,” he said, nearly shaking. “You need not reduce me to ash simply because you can. I beg you to know your own power. Show me mercy even if I don’t deserve it. My life, my heart, my blood— they’re already yours. Heaven knows I have nothing left to give you that isn’t already in pieces.”

He saw nothing but her. He wanted nothing but her. He couldn’t fucking breathe.

Every day was the countdown to a funeral.

Indeed he could hardly even remember who he’d been a year ago; his dreams had been so different, his hopes so peaceful. Never, in his wildest imaginings, could he have envisioned this life— this fate— for himself.

 he was marred beyond recognition, tortured beyond description, and bracing every day for the moment he might at last be allowed to kneel before his wife, so she might finally kill him.

“I know you’ve already fought so hard,” she said, choking through tears. “You’ve already given me everything, and I hate to ask you for more. But if you have any strength left, please use it to come back to me. Please—Cyrus, I beg you—”

Cyrus shot Kamran a hateful look before he set off toward the door. Omid gasped.

“Cyrus, stop,” said Hazan angrily. “This is ridiculous. You are bound to the devil. You cannot participate—” 

Alizeh was stunned, rooted to the ground. Cyrus had hardly reached the threshold when the door gave a thunderous, earsplitting boom, then shattered into pieces with the force of a thunderclap.

“What do you know of sacrifice?” he said.

She was ethereal, glittering softly as she drew nearer the light canting in through the windows. Cyrus felt as if he’d sighted the stars for the first time, irrevocably changed in the aftermath of perceiving the infinite universe.

He was hardly aware of the others, of their ebullient exclamations. Hazan had said something, certainly. Huda was clapping her hands together in delight. But Cyrus couldn’t hear anything beyond the pounding of his own heart, and only then did he realize she was looking at him.

i’m going to need everyone to just shut UP in the next book for the love of god. i think the plot was lost???????

The first 60% of the book were unbearable because of how they treated Cyrus but the ending FINALLY made up for all the traumas it put us through. I'm so happy with the ending for once because I was genuinely horrified with the ending of book 3.

I just know book 5 will have the biggest plot ever. Like it finally started. It needs to be about three times the length of the others.
