Very different from what I typically read, nonetheless it was such an amazing book. It was beautifully written, had so many amazing quotes. My favorite one was when they explain what is the difference between a soulmate and the love of your life. This books makes you think about love and life in such a different outlook. It is not a romance novel at all, it is a very dark and gritty book. Senna character how can I describe her, just a dark and courageous woman. It makes you root for her, even in the mindset that she is at. She is very difficult to related and understand at times but for me that made her character more interesting. Definitely recommend reading this book!

Tarryn Fisher, I give you five heart wrenching, soul devouring stars for Mud Vein. I don't know how you do what you do, but never stop. Your writing has a way of making people think. You're gorgeously brilliant and I hope that you never change who you are. It makes you, you. I've been waiting for Mud Vein for what seems like a hundred years, and would have waited a hundred more. This book struck a nerve with me more than any other book has, and I know the experience I had reading it will stay with me forever. It brought the real, gritty reality nobody seems to want to read about, and threw it in your face. My advice (and some many others will say this too) to you is to truly go into this book blind. The blurb is enough to catch you and plant that little seed in your brain to read it. If you've ever read one of Tarryn's books and loved it, I have no doubt in my mind that you will love this one as well, if not more. There's too much risk going into it that you will spoil it for yourself. This book deserves to be read with an open heart and mind, and will truly change the way you see yourself. Bravo Tarryn. You've done it again, and I know that you will just knock this one out of the park with your next book, because that's just who you are.

I did not expect to read what I just read. I would have never guessed in a million years what this book would have ultimately been about. Mud Vein was dirty and real and exactly what I expected from Tarryn. Senna is an author that does not open up, to anyone. It takes being kidnapped and stripped bare of she thought she knew for her to realize her life isn't what she wanted her thought it was. Just like Senna's, my mind was cranking full throttle trying to decipher the cryptic clues left by her zoo keeper and try to figure out why she was kidnapped. I don't want to give too much away in case whoever reads this, hasn't read this book. My one favorite takeaway from this book: the love of your life and your soulmate can and most likely will be two different people. You can fight it with every cell in your body, but it is a possibility if you believe in that sort of thing. My least favorite takeaway from this book: I can't help but notice Tarryn is always throwing a wildcard in her books. Some random detail that, I personally feel doesn't add too much to the plot. I don't know if it is intentional, to throw off the readers. And it is a detail that always happens at the end of her books. I don't believe it ties the story together... But that's Tarryn and I still love her writing overall.

I finished this book last night (3.11.22) and I just…. I literally have no words… this was my first read of Tarryn Fisher and I am just blown away with how this woman writes. This book sucked me in from the beginning. But it was how the story grew and how the characters grew that made me fall in love. This story… I don’t even know how to explain it… a thriller meets romance but not a traditional romance… but it’s all so so complicated and beautiful and messy and ughhhh… This book made me think… gave me chills and tears and tore my heart apart… just read it and PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING.

Ugh what did I just read?!?! This book was too intense! I'm having a serious book hangover right now. I honestly don't even know how to describe this book except to say that it is very complex.

3.5 stars There is no denying Tarryn Fisher can write....but this was definitely one odd book... I was immediately sucked into the book. A strange, twisted, world built inside a cabin. Senna and Issac find themselves imprisoned against their will by an unknown culprit...but why? Thrown back into Senna's mind we get a picture of her past. She is one messed up character!! Her complexity was beyond me at times, I must admit, and I found some of this part dry as a result. That changed when we arrived back at the cabin. My interest picked up again as the plot began to unravel. Did I figure out who did it? No. Did I understand why it happened. Yes? No? Not sure. I feel like I might need some therapy after reading this......

I've tried so hard to make a great review for this book, but I ended up being dissappointed in every single one of them,so I scrapped them all off. Instead,I will make a short statement.Nothing that hasn't been said before. 1.This book will be the most real book you've ever read.Altought it's very unrealistic.Every single drop of it feels real. 2.You will get a definition of true love between two people. Also, two soulmates.Hint:it's not the same thing. 3.If you read this book, read Marrow by the same author. If you already read Marrow, read Mud Vein.Trust me with this one. 4.I never write concrete reviews for my favorite books.Maybe because my words will never be able to express the beauty and the tragedy of them. 5... 6.. 7.

4.5 stars! THE STORY: Becca : As soon as I finished Mud Vein the main thought running through my head was "WHAT HAVE I JUST READ??!!" I went into Mud Vein blind, I hadn't even read the synopsis in a very long time, I just knew that I needed to finally experience a Tarryn Fisher book and decided to start with this one. I was so excited when Lisa agreed to Buddy Read it with me! I figured we could go on this twisted adventure together! Senna Richards awakens and she is in an unfamiliar place, she has no memory of what happened to her or how she got to the place where she is. She is trapped, locked inside of a home in the middle of what looks like the arctic. Not to mention, the home is surrounded by an electric fence. With no sign of her captor and a house stocked with food and supplies to last for a very long time, she is scared, confused and wondering who's game she is trapped in. “What’s the difference?” I asked him. “Between the love of your life, and your soulmate?” “One is a choice, and one is not.” Lisa : Twisted adventure is right, Becca!! Totally twisted. I had been hearing so many positive things about this story. When Becca asked if I wanted to buddy read it, I jumped at the chance. This definitely seemed like the type of story that would be even more entertaining with a friend. And that was exactly the case! Becca and I were constantly texting each other, usually along the lines of "WTF?!" type of texts. We loved this book, and we decided that instead of reviewing this with the fear of spoilers, instead we would give you guys a little idea of WHY we loved it so much.   WHY WE LOVED MUDVEIN: Lisa : Let's start with a few basics: Tarryn Fisher is a mind ninja. Let's just say this girl knows how to write! This is my first Fisher book (other than Never Never, which she co-wrote with Colleen Hoover) so I had no idea what to expect. I had heard she was pretty amazing, and now I can officially agree with that popular opinion. She gets right into your head with her words and twists your mind until your thoughts are whirling, spinning in circles. Total mind chaos. Totally twisted story line. I had no idea what was going on, who to believe, and there the story would go next. It was super intense, and the few times that I wasn't sure if I had missed something I went back and made sure that I did not. Because trust me, this is the type of story that you don't want to miss a single second of! Leaving you wanting more. My first thought upon finishing this story (after the whole "WTF did I just read?!?!" thoughts, was that I am immediately downloading Marrow because I have to read more of her ninja mind-fuckery madness!   Becca : It really is impossible to discuss this novel without spoilers! So when Lisa suggested this format I agreed! This is a book that you have to go into totally blind and experience one page at a time! Lisa and I hadn't even read the synopsis and it made the whole experience pretty epic! Phenomenal writing: I giggled when I read Lisa's "mind ninja" comment, it is so accurate! Not only can she manipulate the story line and plot into perfection, but her style is so unique! She somehow combines darkness and beauty into every page, every sentence, every word! “You’ve been silent your whole life. You were silent when we met, silent when you suffered. Silent when life kept hitting you. I was like that too, a little. But not like you. You are a stillness. And I tried to move you. It didn’t work. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t move me. I heard everything you didn’t say. I heard it so loudly that I couldn’t shut it off. Your silence, Senna, I hear it so loudly.” Unique and Unpredictable: Tarryn Fisher's writing was so unique in it's style and flow and I loved it! She was also totally unpredictable, but in such a good way! My mind was spinning as I read Mud Vein, questions and theories sprouting and Lisa and I were constantly texting our thoughts and ideas back and forth. From one second to the next I had no idea what would happen. Fisher shocked and surprised me on so many occasions, I can honestly say that I have never been so mind fucked! (the only book that can compare is Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas). It was just so good! Never a dull moment: Lisa and I listened to this on Audio and I honestly could not stop listening! There literally was never a dull moment in this novel! It's not that it was action packed or anything, it was just full of tiny moments and revelations that you had to pay attention to every single one or you would miss something! At times Lisa and I would go back an re-listen to focus on a certain moment or conversation. I loved that about it though, I honestly was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next OMG moment throughout the novel!   TO SUM UP: Becca : I completely agree with Lisa! I am hooked on Tarryn Fisher's writing and I NEED more! I cannot wait experience more of her dark and beautiful magic! “There is a string that connects us that is not visible to the eye. Maybe every person has more than one soul they are connected to, and all over the world there are those invisible strings… Maybe the chances that you’ll find each and every one of your soul mates is slim. But sometimes you’re lucky enough to stumble across one. And you feel a tug. And it’s not so much a choice to love them though their flaws and through your differences, but rather you love them without even trying. You love their flaws.” I highly recommend Mud Vein, it is so unique and a break from the norm! My one piece of advice, is to try and go in as blind as possible. The less you know, the better the experience in my opinion! :D Lisa : I absolutely agree with Becca. Going in blind is the best way to read this book. The unpredictability and uniqueness of the story line will blow your mind, especially when you have no idea what you're reading or what to expect next. It was incredible! I'm definitely looking forward to more of Tarryn's mind ninja skills! Find this review and others like it at Lost in Literature!

There is a string that connects us that is not visible to the eye," he said. “Maybe every person has more than one soul they are connected to, and all over the world there are these invisible strings." As if to make his point, his finger traced a black ribbon that ran through my horse's mane. “Maybe the chances that you'll find each and every one of your soulmates is slim. But sometimes you're lucky enough to stumble across one. And you feel a tug. And it's not so much a choice to love them through their flaws and through your differences, but rather you love them without even trying. You love their flaws."

I can't say for sure when it was that I fell in love with him. It might have been when he told me that I had a mud vein. It might have been days later when I realized it was true. But whatever moment it took for my heart to decide to love him, it decided swiftly, and it decided for me.
