Alcoholism is a disease with many faces, and some of them look beautiful.

And Nina understood, maybe for the first time, that letting people love you and care for you is part of how you love and care for them.

They had taught her that family is found, that whether it be blood or circumstance or choice, what binds us does not matter. All that matters is that we are bound.

Taylor Mears

She was a woman, after all. Living in a world created by men.

Our parents live inside us, whether they stick around or not, Hud thought. They express themselves through us in the way we hold a pen or shrug our shoulders, in the way we raise our eyebrow. Our heritage lingers in our blood. The idea of it scared the shit out of him.

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, the family drama that ensues will change their lives forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over--especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud--because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own--including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

loved June and Mick's story but not much off the siblings story. casey coming in was just irrelevant, there is just too much perspectives that you get confused really easily and it just wasn't that good....

sorry vivi can't come to the phone right now why? oh cause she is DROWNING IN HER TEARS. i love authors who make me feel things, who just pull me into the worlds they create, and tjr is always one of them. i hope she keeps writing books in the universe of crazy celebrities i love them all so much my favorite rotten people <3

Why do I keep reading these kinds of books. In the first 300 pages we never hear anything about Nina being a “doormat” and yet in the final act that is the thing she needs to overcome. Also the faking your death thing caught me off guard for a book that isn’t a thriller.

I needed something as a break-read between the cycle of reading fantasy books and this turned out to be a pretty decent one.

On the book cover, Holly Bourne describes this book as 'the perfect beach read, with the emotional depth of the ocean' which sums up the book quite well.

The writing style is simple and easy to get into. The setting is lavish. The main characters aren't really unique but they are written well. The story flows well even though you kind of know where it's going.

It served my purpose of being a break-read and I had fun time being the fly on the wall at the messed up party of the decade!

Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author that you are!

Her books are so easy to read and reel you in so fast. The anger was pulsing in my veins at one point. The complexities of being a parent, but how the most important part is just being there, so well portrayed. Funnily enough, this book made me feel so grateful, grateful for the life I could’ve had, but didn’t because I got out sooner, grateful for having the courage that is so much needed at points. I was june, i have been nina, and i strive to be kit.

Good story, lots of different types of characters and points of view!! Full of family drama, lies, secrets, and party shenanigans!!!! The things those people got up to at the party in a house that none of them owned was mind blowing!! Definitely a slow start and took me a while to get into but all in all a decent story of family, relationships, and life!!

Nina Riva, the president of the tortured eldest daughter club.

I loved this book. the pacing was perfect. everything the author mentions has relevance.

love, heartbreak, family drama, overcoming adversity, and an insane party? what more could you ask for!

the characters were real - flawed, but still ultimately likable and redeemable (most of them anyway). I have not related to a character as much as I related to nina in a long, long time… possibly ever. eldest daughters everywhere, nina riva is about to become your new favorite fictional character.

It focuses a lot about family. How it is important to remember our past but be able to change our future. We are our parents creations however we can also mold ourselves during all our life.
