Teagan White's 2014 children's book Adventures with Barefoot Critters is one of my own personal favorites. I was excited, then, when I heard she was publishing a follow-up, Counting with Barefoot Critters. At the same time, I was slightly wary: what if White is just repeating herself here, and, in the process, messes with the delicate balance of warmth and memory and seasons and time that she already perfected?

But Counting with Barefoot Critters is fresh while keeping the strengths of Adventures. This is perhaps even more surprising since this is a counting book. A fresh counting book? Yes, and a one with more lessons than simple counting. Here White takes us to a small island (there's a lovely little map at the start) where our day begins with one barefoot critter reading, enjoying an activity perfect for one. As the day goes on, she and her neighborhood friends seek each other out to have fun and fill out White's beautiful illustrations with love and care.
