This time for Africa! The colonial haunts return in what is probably my favourite premise among the books. Served on a large platter consisting of tribals, missionaries and local myths that show how Novik can be more than the sum of her research, Empire of Ivory nearly succeeds in avoiding the "more of the same" outcome. It is ridiculous fun, but there are also pages to think about here. Novik is cautious in her approach to dismiss colonialism, but there's no denying her heart.

I think this is my favorite book of the series so far. As usual, Temeraire is completely adorable and I just want to give him a big hug and spend all day talking books with him. Actually, all the dragons are wonderful in their own ways so I'd be happy with a hug from any of them. The pacing was also really nice in this one; plenty of action without feeling too rushed. There were a few slower spots where my attention lagged a little bit, but overall I was so happy with this book.
