Not all of them are grandparents, or will be. They're just seniors, people who have been alive for many years, and per- haps that's their only achievement.

After all, since the world began, we've been eating each other. If not symbolically, then we've been literally gorging on each other.

Many people have naturalized what the media insist on calling the “Transition”. But he hasn’t because he knows that transition is a word that doesn’t convey how quick and ruthless the process was. One word to sum up and classify the unfathomable. An empty word. Change, transformation, shift: synonyms that appear to mean the same thing, though the choice of one over the other speaks to a distinct view of the world.

His sister’s kids. There are two of them. He thinks that she was never much interested in maternity, that she had her kids because it’s one of the things you’re supposed to do in life, like throwing a party on your fifteenth birthday, getting married,renovating your home and eating meat.

He had to teach her not to feel fear. Fear that was learnt, ingrained, accepted.

She had the human look of a domesticated animal.

Interesting thought experiment. Dystopic world looking at the morality issues of overpopulation, old age, medical tests, greed, power, status symbols, rituals ppl socialize with but could actually be harmful, pets, governmental propaganda of viruses for social control and of course food industry.<br /><br />Interesting topics, the novel goes through a lot in a short space. The characters had some moral dilemmas about human consumption, but still corrupted shown at the ending.

Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

I read this in the original spanish, Cadaver Exquisito. Great descriptions, nice plot, I recommend if people enjoy dystopian societies. Would have been 5 stars if it had given me a longer end, kinda saw it coming and went kinda fast to finish. Couldn’t put it down though.

Cadáver exquisito

Este libro me puso a cuestionarme por horas sobre cuál sería del límite de la humanidad. ¿A qué nivel de crueldad e insensibilidad podemos llegar los humanos si se nos lleva a eso? Agustina Bazterrica hace la pregunta de qué haríamos si los animales ya no pudieran ser utilizados como una fuente de proteína, y la respuesta realmente me revolvió el estómago. Disfruté leer cada capítulo de este libro, aunque hay que admitir que más de uno fue difícil de terminar por los temas que se tratan y por la tranquilidad con la que los personajes los comunican, porque al fin y al cabo esa vida tan trágica es su realidad a la cual la mayoría sienten la necesidad de acostumbrarse con tan de mantener la cordura. El final fue absolutamente desgarrador y definitivamente hizo que perdiera la pizca de esperanza que llegué a sentir por el futuro de la sociedad presentada en este libro, pero este libro es un verdadero imperdible (si estás dispuesta/o a cuestionar tu propia humanidad).

cannibalism horror— probably would have been better to read in original language. huge commentary on power imbalances and racism , classism, and the commodification of women vs men once people are stripped to the values of their bodies. people would detach themselves from such horrors easily as long as they stay “human”. reminded me a little of the vegetarian , as the entire book is through the pov of a man and takes away any autonomy the women have as they’re all viewed from his perspective (or simply seen as an animal)

i hate to say that i did not rly care for this book :-/ 

yes, it has a very dystopian and emotional plot - we live in a society where human meat is the only meat, mc is struggling with the loss of his son and separation from his wife while also dealing with his elderly father and selfish sister. i feel like there were too many different struggles to where none could be fully fleshed out. 

i HATED that he impregnated the female.. then trained her to live in his house. are we ignoring that this is basically beastiality? sexual assault? so weird. when the book when into part 2, i almost stopped reading. dont get me started on the teenager/puppies scene

i also wonder how much is lost in translation. there were clearly more drawn out emotional scenes but they felt underwhelming. if im picking a cannibalism book to read, i would choose the lamb

This book will leave you with a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach for days. Set in a dystopian future- after an event known as " The Transition" takes place, animals/livestock are infected with a virus that makes them inedible. So everyone becomes vegan. The end. I wish! People then resort to cannibalism and the industrial farming system is co-opted to now process humans bred specifically for this purpose. The protagonist (I guess) Marcos, is a middleman in this new/old industry buying "heads" of human chattel. Marcos himself is a vegetarian. Separated from his wife after the loss of their son, he describes his cotidian life even while dealing with this vampiric horror on the daily. Soon, Marcos enters into a moral quandary when he is gifted a woman. Unable to kill her, he slowly bonds with her and eventually impregnates her. Only at the end of the novel do we learn of his true intentions as he goes from morally grey to morally bankrupt. This book reminded me of the film Daylight, with Ethan Hawke. A vampiric world as well, where humans hide out of fear of being farmed. With the blood supply slowly running out, society begins to devolve and crumble. Back to this book, it is a true indictment of capitalism. Capitalism is in and of itself dystopian. It is not meant to serve all the people in a society, it is meant to serve capital and those that have it. It creates inequality, destroys the environment, it is exploitative. It grants power to a small minority whose tastes and whims become law and policy that affects us all. It highlights what we are willing to normalize in our society and how we can adapt to horrific new norms like State sanctioned cannibalism. Is there such a thing as ethical consumerism? What happens when we call other human beings animals? How can we ever do what is morally right in a system that rewards only the greedy and self-interested?
