"La Mustache" തുടങ്ങിയ ആദ്യനോവലുകളിൽ (പിന്നീട് ഇത് അയാൾ തന്നെ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത സിനിമയുമായി) ഭ്രമകല്പനകൾ കടന്നു വരുന്ന സ്ഥിരം സാഹിത്യ ശൈലിയാണെങ്കിൽ "The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception", അയാളുടെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് ആയി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്ന "The Kingdom: A Novel" തുടങ്ങിയ നോവലുകളിൽ ഒരു ജേര്ണലിസ്റ്റിക് രീതിയാണ് Carrère അവലംബിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. 1999-ലാണ് "The Adversary" പുറത്തുവന്നത്.

“On the Saturday morning of January 9, 1993, while Jean-Claude Romand was killing his wife and children, I was with mine in a parent-teacher meeting at the school attended by Gabriel, our eldest son. He was five years old, the same age as Antoine Romand. Then we went to have lunch with my parents, as Jean-Claude Romand did with his, whom he killed after their meal.” “What you have done is not in my eyes the deed of a common criminal, or that of a madman, either, but the action of someone pushed to the limit by overwhelming forces, and it is these terrible forces I would like to show at work.” ഒരു കത്തിൽ Romand, തന്നെ പരിശോധിച്ച സൈക്കയാട്രിസ്റ്റുകളുടെ കുറിപ്പ് പകർത്തിയിരുന്നു - “In this particular case, and at a certain archaic level of functioning, J.C.R. was no longer able to distinguish very well between himself and his love objects.......at that level, there is no longer much difference between suicide and homicide.” Romand-നെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം “a writer’s approach to this tragedy can largely complete and transcend other, more reductive visions,” എന്നതായിരുന്നു വിചാരം, Carrère വിശദമാക്കുന്നു.

"Because the third person was no one but appeared to give what was written the status of truth...And I didn’t think you could know the truth about Romand. On the other hand, I could tell the truth about myself in relation to Romand. ...you have access to yourself, others are a black box" - Paris Review).

That’s his mode of being, he can’t do otherwise, and I think he does it more to fool himself than to fool others. ആ സെക്റ്റിൽ അംഗമായ Marie-France എഴുത്തുകാരനോട് പറയുകയാണ് - “To think that it should have taken all those lies, those random accidents, and that terrible tragedy so that today he might do all the good he does around him. It’s something I’ve always believed, you see, and that I see at work in Jean-Claude’s life: everything works out and finds its meaning in the end for those who love God.” “I no longer saw any mystery in his long imposture, only a pathetic mixture of blindness, cowardice, and distress.” അപ്പോഴും Carrère-യ്ക്ക് മനസ്സിൽ “He is not putting on an act, of that I’m sure, but isn’t the liar inside him putting one over on him?

“I thought that writing this story could only be either a crime or a prayer.”
