"La Mustache" തുടങ്ങിയ ആദ്യനോവലുകളിൽ (പിന്നീട് ഇത് അയാൾ തന്നെ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത സിനിമയുമായി) ഭ്രമകല്പനകൾ കടന്നു വരുന്ന സ്ഥിരം സാഹിത്യ ശൈലിയാണെങ്കിൽ "The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception", അയാളുടെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് ആയി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്ന "The Kingdom: A Novel" തുടങ്ങിയ നോവലുകളിൽ ഒരു ജേര്ണലിസ്റ്റിക് രീതിയാണ് Carrère അവലംബിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. 1999-ലാണ് "The Adversary" പുറത്തുവന്നത്.

Romand-ന്റെ നുണകളും അതിന്റെ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങളും തന്നെ അസുഖകരമാണെന്നിരിയ്ക്കേ അയാൾ ഒരു മനഃസാക്ഷിക്കുത്തുമില്ലാതെ സ്വന്തം മക്കളെ കൊല്ലുന്നതും മറ്റും തന്റെ സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ രീതിയിൽ വിശദശാംശങ്ങളോടെ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് വിവരിയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ വായന അതീവ ദുഷ്കരമായിത്തീരുന്നു. ദിവസങ്ങളോളം ഇത് വായിച്ചതിന്റെ ആഘാതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് എനിയ്ക്ക് മോചിതനാകാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. അയാളുടെ ക്രൂരത മാത്രമല്ല അത് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ കാണിയ്ക്കുന്ന ലാഘവത്വം, അയാളുടെ സമയത്തെ ചിന്തയിലെയും പ്രവൃത്തിയിലെയും സ്വാഭാവികത എന്നിവ കൂടിയാണ് നമ്മെ ഞെട്ടിയ്ക്കുന്നത്.
