It's been a while since I got to read a book about an apocalypse. I ended up enjoying this more than I expected. It turns out Dystopian and I haven't fallen out of love thank god XD

The title kind of sold it away lol. The book is about 7 people waking up from their sleep in their same old places, just to find out everyone has vanished and everything has been abandoned. They try to get to one another and to figure out what has happened. 

I like the idea of the characters being absolutely clueless about everything at first and their journeys in search of other living people. The writing is well-paced; the dangers that the group had to encounter and how they managed to deal with them were pretty realistic but still enjoyable, in my opinion. And since my brain is small, I am incredibly grateful the author didn't throw in a bunch of scientifically complex terms and force me to understand everything to get a grip on crucial details. The ending is somewhat bittersweet, but rather makes sense (I hope it's not a spoiler). 

 I just wish the characters showed more of their emotions and talk... less, and that we get to know more of the elements involved in the third part of the book.

Overall, The Apocalypse Seven by Gene Doucette is a fast paced, post apocalyptic romp that never gets TOO heavy or deep, yet weaves a fun balance of intense survival and the less intense exploration. While any apocalypse story likely falls under the sci-fi and possibly horror blankets, this story reads more like an adventure with a pretty weird sci-fi slant, especially by the final act.

The characters, while not super deep and lacking any big character story arcs, are enjoyable and relatable and serve the story well. Though I still wish I could see this same story told through the eyes of just one or two of the seven versus jumping back and forth between all of them.

It’s not perfect, but it’s fun. And at the end of the day, sometimes that’s all a good story needs to be.

Great cover and blurb, but lacking execution.

It appears I'm the outlier here and I'm asking myself if I read the same book as everyone else, but my main problems were with the thinking and acting of the characters. 

One (being me!) would think that instead of taking an almost leisurely stroll, after picking up a blind girl on the way and hearing wolves, you'd panic, run for cover, try to get a backpack, find water, food and some sort of weapon until you know what's going on. The characters already immediately assumed the power grid was down and nobody tried finding a cell phone or telephone. I mean those are young adults in the 21st century right? Nobody even tried to check if a key was left in the cars on the road. Instead they talk about how the car doesn't look "good enough". Seriously?!
"Ah we cannot cook anything (after checking a restaurant)...why don't you try and loot some houses, gas stations or whatever and try to find a lighter or cans or food left behind?
Let's just say I got EXTREMELY frustrated very quickly and didn't make it further than 20% before I gave up.
The ideas with nature taking over and oversized wolves were great, but boy did the writing, world building and characters not make sense at all.
If you like dystopian, by all means try it out, but if you're wanting some common sense and logic with it, better skip this one.
