The stories range from post war families, robots or clones working on distant starships, urban fantasy and so forth. The range in art and lettering skills varies, and unfortunately not all of them were easy for me to read without using a magnifying glass (along with my prescription glasses).

I finally managed to snag a copy of Beyond at TCAF (the Toronto Arts Comic Festival) this past weekend, and I am super glad that I did! The book itself is quite beautiful, and it looks very professionally put together. The stories are all, as per the title, science fiction and fantasy tales that deal with queer people. Queer identities are not the subject of most of the stories; readers are just exposed to genre narratives where the main characters aren't just straight and/or cis. I should note that some of the stories feel a bit rushed, and that's a pretty common complaint for anthologies. It's very difficult to write short, satisfying narratives that wrap up in ten pages. However, despite the fact that a lot of the submissions in Beyond left me wishing I had a full book to explore the issues, I thought the vast majority of the stories did a good job of giving me a nice vignette that I could enjoy. the quality of the art was superb, and overall I was delightful with the book. Now hopefully I actually catch the kickstarter for volume 2!
