The author caught my attention with: magical book, then caught my full attention with: talking Hen. Star is not the only amazing character in this world.
Fable embarks on a dangerous journey to save her cousin. I loved every part of it that brought me memories of beloved classics.

The story was not in a hurry though the characters are. It's not some middle grade fiction book written hastily. Each character was entranced properly into the story with their roles clearly explained. Although there are so many characters involve for a middle grade book, I enjoyed it. Each twist and turn of the plot took me back to my childhood reading days, full of magic and make-believes. 

The book follows Fable, our lead girl character who journeyed from the normal world into a magical one. She was trying to find someone in that magical realm but on her quest, she stumbled to some newly-found friends. As both of these new characters are traveling for the same reason she had, they venture together to finding the Fey Witch who, as folks like to put it, solved problems like they have. While on their way to that no-one-knows place, they experienced struggles and surpassed each of them. Just when I thought all are going well, I am liking the lead character, then she broke the rules. That was the part everything turned to chaos, the popular part where the main character chose to be the hard-headed subject that she is. As the story progresses, they experienced more problems, unraveled secrets, had answers to their problems without solution to a bigger problem they put themselves into.

The story continued until the end, meeting new characters again, finding ways to get out. I love that the story ended in a peaceful manner at least for this book. There are other addition to this series that are already published. As much as I'd love to read them right now, I still don't have the copy and can't buy with the pandemic ongoing. This book is chaotic yes, as suggested by the title but it ended happily at least.

The Book of Chaos is a middle-grade, fantasy novel and the first book in the Starfell series. Little Fable has magic but that needs to remain a secret from the world. She craves for knowledge and the freedom to be who she is, unaware of the darkness that lurks above her since she was a baby. When a strange book drives nightmares into her dreams and her cousin disappears, Fable is determined to bring him back. The road is long and dangerous but she's not alone.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a lighthearted and interesting story with friendship and the need for self-expression driving it. Although the characters are young, the hardships they face need courage and resolve to be overcome. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the story weaved itself and the way the characters complemented and empowered each other. I loved the plot twist and the elements it brought to the story.

I look forwards to the next instalment.
