I was excited to read this book in anticipation of my upcoming trip to Italy next spring. I loved all the detail of the background sections but they interrupted the narrative about the Borgias enough that connecting the overall timeline was difficult. Also, a lot of the information got past me since I listened to it as an audiobook. This book would have been better served being read slower and in print. I also lack a lot of the necessary background knowledge to fully understand the topic. After a while I wondered how it was a history of the family when it started after the family had risen to prominence. (This could also be due to the fact that I didn't catch everything.) Also, the book reads as overly defensive of the Borgias. According to the author, the Borgias were obviously not as evil as everyone paints them as but no further to explain. All the rumors about the Borgias were baseless, according to Meyer.
This was a good book but just good, nothing more. I'm not sure whether I could recommend it or not.
