I really enjoyed this book!! It was cute and funny. I love how it included a black girl’s love of STEM and that she was one of the best at her job!! Representation Matters!!!!

However, despite the chemistry and mutual attraction between Samiah and Daniel being apparent from the beginning, I didn't find this book to be overly romantic. I also never felt giddy about their romance. Although Samiah and Daniel had some cute moments, fun banter, great conversations, and were likable, enjoyable main characters overall, I expected more romance.

Last but not least, I wasn't really interested in Daniel's storyline regarding the undercover operation and purely wanted more romance.

Overall, an okay read. I’m interested in continuing the series, especially since I really like Taylor and London and enjoyed the emphasis on strong female friendships, which I think is the best part of the book.

Smart and steamy! I ADORE when women are written in books with jobs other than something having to do with fashion or a bakery (not to say I don't like those either) but I sincerely look up to any woman with a STEM background like GET IT GIRL. The female friendships in the book were super relatable too. Nothing perky or outlandish, just genuine banter, happy hours, and late night rescue calls. As much as I know this was a rom-com, I lived for chapters that was about Samiah and her job and how she was absolutely killing it in the industry.

Smart, funny and sexy - a modern rom-com of love, friendship and chasing your dreams!

Great diversity was showcased in “The Boyfriend Project” and a decent assembled group of characters, so kudos to the author! Minus that, everything else was meh. It was a pretty mediocre read and there wasn’t anything besides what was listed above that stood out. I just wish there was that something something to win me over but there is potential for sure so I look forward to seeing what else this author releases in the future.

A cute romance with a strong and smart woman in engineering as the main character. As another woman in engineering I related to many of the challenges that Samiah faced, but this book also helped me understand the greater challenge that POC face, something which is important to understand, especially given our current environment. I also loved the love interest Daniel, and the way that he respected Samiah, listened to and understood the challenges she faced, and double checked for consent before even holding her hand. Loved to see it and I really enjoyed this book.

I’ve had a lot of issues with reading contemporary romance lately due to, well, *gestures at the world*, but this book sucked me right in. It’s a sexy and funny workplace romance, with a Black heroine and a half-Black, half-Korean hero, and the cat-fishing friend group was an incredible hook.

“Happiness had not been part of the equation when she’d made her plans. The concept was too vague for her to fully grasp it. She felt safer, more in control, when dealing in absolutes. True happiness—whatever that meant—would follow once she finally achieved these concrete items she’d set out to attain.”

For the most part, Samiah is firmly in control of her life. She’s already got the awesome job, downtown condo, and full package Mustang GTE, so the only thing left on her checklist is the man to share her life with. Too bad Austin seems to only have cheating scum – but at least her latest dating failure netted her two new friends, London and Taylor. The three of them pledge to focus less on dating on more on their own happiness, and for Samiah that means finally working on her app prototype. If only she didn’t immediately run into Daniel, the new hire at Trendsetters, who seems to meet every item on “get a man” checklist. But what she doesn’t know is that he’s actually a Treasury Department agent trying to unravel a money laundering scheme featuring the company’s software. Daniel’s used to rolling in to a company, uncovering the bad guys, and then rolling out, no complications or regrets. But from their first meeting, neither Samiah nor Daniel can deny their attraction to each other. Is their relationship worth Samiah putting her dreams on hold, and can it survive Daniel’s lie?

Samiah is, frankly, the definition of life goals. She’s smart, confident, knows her worth, and I would love to go out for a drink with her. I liked that the author didn’t shy away from the realities of being a woman in tech, especially as a Black woman. When Daniel tries to reassure her that she doesn’t have to have everything perfect with her app as it’s just a demo, she reminds him that no, she has to be perfect and better and more, or else she and every other black woman after her will be judged for her imperfections. The secondary characters were amazing, especially London and Taylor. Their meetings and conversations were the highlight of the book for me, and frankly I wanted more of them. In terms of non-supportive female characters, I cackled out loud at Samiah’s coworker Keighleigh (that NAME, y’all) and appreciated how Samiah handled that relationship. I also liked that the book repeatedly emphasized happiness over career ambitions for multiple characters. I know it’s a romance, and yes, it’s great to see characters be able to have it all, but in this case, it was more interesting to watch each character explore the pros and cons of their decisions.

“You’ll see how you like those jogs along the river when the thermometer is nearing three digits.”
“Aw, don’t tell me that.” Daniel groaned. “Just the other day I had to stop in the middle of my run and peel my shirt off.”
Her gaze dropped to his chest. “That must have been nice.” Her horrified eyes shot back up to his face, wide with dismay. “I said that out loud, didn’t I?”

The book is definitely funny and sexy, but I felt like the romance part got shortchanged. Everything happens over the period of a few months while both characters are focused on both their work for Trendsetters and their external projects (Samiah’s app and Daniel’s, uh, actual job). Even during the time they’re spending together physically, they’re still spending the majority of it working. There’s also a confusing time jump of a few weeks during which they go from “ok, let’s date” to actually spending a couple nights a week with each other, and it felt like a missed opportunity for building their relationship.

“It was difficult to grasp just how freeing it felt to tell her truth without fear of being branded a complainer or excuse-maker or any of the other labels people slapped on her when she tried to explain the pressure she’d been under to perform.”

Daniel never really quite meshed as a character for me. He’s sweet, yes, and definitely a cinnamon roll. But the two main character traits I got about him are that he was so supportive of her, from checking in how she felt to giving her foot massages and that he felt guilty about lying to her. It’s all in relation to her, though. It didn’t seem like there was anything else to him besides what he was to her. I also didn’t feel like Daniel groveled enough to make up for his actions during the dark moment. After repeatedly refusing to hear Daniel’s apologies, Samiah basically forgives him with little effort on his part, and while her thought process for why she did that was clear, it just felt too easy for something that could’ve had serious repercussions for her. The epilogue was a little weird, too, as it wasn’t the airtight HEA I expected, but then throughout the book Samiah proved over and over that she moves at her own pace.

Overall, this is funny and sexy, even if I wasn’t sold on the romance, so this is a 3.5 star read for me. Based on the end of the book, I’m guessing Taylor’s story is next, and I will definitely be picking it up.

This is not you’re average rom-com making it that much better! There’s definitely a steamy romance and those two get the cutest romance award in my book. But there’s also an office mystery, strong female friendships, positive self-talk, and social issues awareness. Loved all of it! 💛 ⁣

Not really sure how I feel about the book. Not a whole lot happened tbh. I enjoyed the dual perspective’s but I don’t feel like the story really progressed. From Daniel’s side of things his undercover job went from 0-100 with no kind of warning and with Samiah I kind of got tired of the whole “I’m so great, but I have to be better than everyone else” trope. Also the “smut” scenes if you can even call them that were not great. So would I recommend this book to a friend? Probably not unless you want something that you don’t have to put too much effort into reading.

I knew I had to read this book as soon as I read the premise, because that it’s an amazing idea and I just had this instant feeling that the book would be a lot of fun. So, when I got the ARC, I was very happy and just waited till the right moment to pick it up. And I’m so glad I did.

The loved the way this book started. Despite the fact that the three woman are catfished by a guy and their whole encounter goes viral on the internet (it’s my worst nightmare and I’m pretty skeptical about going viral plot lines), I liked that the author concentrated more on the friendship that develops between the three of them and the feeling of solidarity it provides. I know how hard it is to find genuine friendships as an adult, so I really loved seeing such a good one develop between this trio. As most of the story takes place in a tech company, I really enjoyed the workplace vibe that the author managed to create, and it felt like something I would love to work at. Along with the friendship and a very fun romantic plot line, we also get some mystery elements but they do remain mostly in the background and never takeover the story. The writing is very easy to breeze through, and I didn’t wanna put it down at all because I was having so much fun.

Samiah is a great character. An accomplished black woman in the tech industry, she is hardworking, smart, driven and ambitious, but she also wants to do everything she can to help other young women of color succeed in the industry and provide them the support that she didn’t receive. She sets too high expectations, beats herself up for not achieving them even though it’s not her fault, and takes on all the weight in the world - but she also knows her worth and doesn’t let anyone question or undermine her credentials. She is a role model and someone to look up to, and any tech company in the real world would be lucky to have someone like her as an employee. 

Daniel on the other hand is almost perfect - sweet, sensitive, thoughtful, and just the right kind of charming. I really liked that he always listened to Samiah and understood her POV and where she was coming from, and never invalidated her experiences. I loved the flirtation they had going, and the witty banter made me very happy. The romance development was more on the sweeter side than steamy, but I think that’s what I wanted at this time. There is of course the mystery surrounding Daniel which leads to some back and forth between them and bit of a heartache, but I can’t talk about it much without going into spoilery territory. But I felt that playing up the mystery element more could have been fascinating. 

As I mentioned before, I adored the friendship between Samiah, Taylor and London. They just have this instant connection and the way they motivated each other, and also called out when something was wrong, was amazing and as a woman reader, it naturally reminded me of my girlfriends. I also loved Samiah’s sister and the dynamic they shared, though we don’t get to see them together a lot. 

In the end, I can just say that this was a fun love story with great characters, and a solid friend group that’ll remind you of your own. And apart from the friendship element, it was the main character’s accomplishments and goals as a black woman in tech, and the way she handled any obstacles in her way that was the highlight of this novel for me. This was my first book by the author but I know it won’t be my last and if my guess is correct, the next book is gonna be Taylor’s story and I’m already excited for it.

I had high, high hopes for this book, but I found it a bit lacking.
The story progressed very slowly and I found it quite predictable. There wasn’t all that much added to the plot within the book that I didn’t already know from the blurb.
Samiah and Daniel were both great characters but again I found them lacking depth. I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress, but their difficulties, again, were predictable.

Samiah Brooks' life ticks off all the boxes on her "perfect life" checklist: great job? Check. Lots of savings? Check. The perfect man? Up until the night she found out her boyfriend was cheating on her with three other women, Samiah was willing to tweak the definition of perfect. After the girls' confrontation goes viral, the three women decide to team up on the boyfriend project: no dating for six months while they work on themselves, their dreams, and their careers. That's fine--until the dreamy Daniel Collins walks into Samiah's office. Can she keep her promise to only work on herself, or will Daniel be too irresistible? And after being scorned once, can she even be sure she can trust a man that's too good to be true?

The Boyfriend Project is a lighthearted office romantic comedy, but it suffers from a disjointed plot, flat characters, and insanely cringe-inducing dialogue (the sex scenes alone will make you blush--not because of the sexy steaminess, but because knowing such a ridiculous block of text got approved by a publisher is EMBARRASSING). The whole plot of the novel is that Samiah is going to put aside men and focus on herself, finally focusing on the parts of her life she's neglected. But within a month, she's with Daniel, completely undermining her own belief in herself.

Daniel's character is beyond unrealistic. His obsession with Samiah is creepy; he stalks through her neighborhood, waits for her at the coffee bar so he can have a conversation with her, and follows her around, constantly asking if she wants a lunch date. His internal dialogue, while hilarious, is not rooted in reality. It is what a woman wishes a man would feel like, without realizing how maniacal it is.

Overall, The Boyfriend Project had a promising concept but failed to deliver. The plot synopsis doesn't come close to describing what this book is about. There were a few bright moments, like when Rochon used this novel to point out how hard it is for Black women in STEM fields, or how sexism is rampant in the tech industry; but most of it was spent drooling over Daniel's scrumptious, deliciously undulating muscles, or Samiah's sexy, tasty smile. A technical complaint: the use of similes are crazy and used in such an elementary way that it's laughable; you think trying to talk to Samiah is harder than being a Marine trekking through the Indonesian archipelagos? Try taking this book seriously, Daniel.

The build up was great and I liked the 'big issue'. Often times you get a romcom where the issue is way too big/serious, this one was perfect!

WHAT A BEAUTY OF A BOOK! Farrah Rochon stole the entire show with this first installment in a new series!

The story starts off with Samiah finding out that her "boyfriend" has been basically catfishing her. She arrives at the restaurant where he is, ends things with him, and gains two friends that this bf was also catfishing. This ended up going completely viral, something Samiah wasn't too happy about and even questioned if she should not be friends with Taylor and London. I have to say that this portion of the book had me laughing and giggling so much! It really set up the premise for the rest of the book.

She wouldn't tolerate anything less than world domination.

Samiah's character is surely one to admire. Being a woman of color in the tech industry hasn't been easy. She has had to climb through hurdles and fight harder than anyone else. The perseverance and patience this woman has puts my nonexistent one to shame. She has unfortunately been the victim of people stealing her ideas and even then, she has been a pro at handling these situations). Because of this, she has kept a project of hers a secret. She wants to launch a "Just Friends" app, and doesn't want anyone stealing this baby.

He made her feel bold and playful and so many other delicious things.

Now let's talk about the hotshot tech! I kind of melted a lot a little with Daniel throughout the entire novel. There's just something about him that had me swooning at every second. And yes, I just swooned right now thinking about him! Okay, back to this PG review. *ahem* Daniel isn't necessarily all that he seems to be. Yes, he's totally a great guy (amazing!), but the reason why he's at Samiah's job is not merely because he needs a job. Of course, this is something he keeps a secret from everyone, including Samiah.

I totally understood why Daniel did what he did and why he kept it a secret. I give him props for truly trying to stay away from Samiah, but he just couldn't help but be so attracted by this fierce and gorgeous woman. I loved how genuine their friendship and then relationship was. It made me root for them so much! They talked! THEY ACTUALLY HAD GENUINE CONVERSATIONS! This spoke volumes for me. The author did a fantastic job with this relationship!

"I don't mind waking up at the crack of dawn if it means I get to spend the night with you."

Now let's talk about the female friendships! Taylor, London and Samiah couldn't be more different, but they just fit so well together! These ladies are true #SquadGoals despite of how they met. I admired how these ladies supported each others' endeavors no matter what. They truly believed in each other and I find that so beautiful for women who just met!

"I'm not sure we can call ourselves #SquadGoals if there's only one person in the squad reaching her goals. We better get our asses in gear."

Overall, The Boyfriend Project is a wonderful romance filled with outstanding friendship, a strong and fierce and independent heroine, an oh-so-sweet and delicious hero, and it also features talks on racism in the tech industry as well as for women of color. I truly enjoyed that the author had those talks in the book because it added to the depth-level of the story and the characters. Also, that ending has me so freaking excited for the next book!

It was my first time listening to Je Nie Fleming as a narrator and it so won't be the last time! Her voice was so soothing and fit the characters so well. Her voice truly enhanced the experience for me and made me enjoy the story even more!

I do not like this book. I was super excited about a romance novel focusing on a woman in STEM but this book just didn't work. I felt bogged down in cultural references and I felt like everyone just kept repeating themselves. The characterization was also weak as it felt like a majority of these characters had one quirk that just made them different enough to be distinguishable but not memorable. My favorite character would probably have to be the love interest because I found his second job to be much more intriguing than anything else in this novel. Despite that though, I didn't feel like there was any real payoff after all of this either as I felt there was minimal chemistry between the main character and her love interest. Overall, I thought this book would be different than it was but I just didn't like it and I couldn't recommend it.

The Boyfriend Project started off as a simple contemporary romance but with an unpredictable twist and engaging plot, it became a really enjoyable and entertaining book.

Samiah is a brilliant protagonist. She is straight-talking, ambitious, honest and intelligent without compromising her kindness and humility. I liked that she was a successful woman striving for even more, rather than just getting to a good point and accepting she was at the top. Going against the odds as a black woman working in the tech industry, she continued to break barriers and stereotypes. Even during the chaos of being part of a viral video, Samiah is still able to preserve her heroine status.

Daniel is an appealing love interest for the main character. He is very sweet, charming and thoughtful, even though he exists under this cloud of mystery. The reader learns about his past and agenda in the book, but the characters are left in the dark. And without spoiling the entire book, it was intriguing to see how Daniel’s involvement in the story played out.

The romance was sweet in this book. I was expecting more, but there were cute moments dotted throughout. I definitely rooted for the love story between Samiah and Daniel, and their mutual attraction and chemistry was obvious from the beginning. Their open conversation was well-balanced, and I like how Daniel became a cheerleader for Samiah, especially when discussing the more serious topics like race and sexism in the workplace. 

If there’s one thing the author masters it is celebration of female friendship in the book, especially because it rose from mutual betrayal and misfortune. Three women dating one man could easily result in the unhealthy competition society likes to breed. But instead the ladies walked out on Craig in total triumph – it was glorious. 

I love that even after the event, the woman make an effort to maintain a friendship. It’s not easy to build platonic relationships in a new place, and the author touched in this through the storylines in the book. Samiah’s new friends are awesome too: Taylor has a quirky sense of humour while London has more of a wry wit. The women aren’t carbon copies of each other, they have different personalities, backgrounds and circumstances, but this doesn’t become a stumbling block in their budding friendship.

One of the most accurate aspects of this book is that the hard-working characters actually spend time at work. Samiah, Daniel and many of the secondary characters have demanding full-time jobs and work to earn the praise they receive. The author did a great job at developing an authentic but humorous workplace environment, and I really enjoyed the events that took place at the Trendsetters office. 

For me, the highlight of the book is Samiah’s exciting ambition and her experiences. The twist from Daniel’s side of things definitely kept me reading, but I related to Samiah as a black woman and found her to be really inspiring. 

It’s safe to say The Boyfriend Project read a lot like a film. It’s well-paced, easy to follow and filled with likable characters. Even the ones you don’t like are a great addition to the story. This book is perfect for fans of an office romance with a great twist. The only reason it wasn’t a five-star read is because the resolution fell a little flat and wasn’t as satisfying as I would have hoped.

My favorite part of THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT came at the beginning of the novel. Our protagonist Samiah Brooks discovers the man she's been tepidly dating is ALSO dating two other women. She finds out on Twitter of all places and when she goes to confront him, she and the other women band together to take him down. They go viral, and all three must now contend with the ramifications.

Seeing these characters become friends is almost better than the romance, which for me was lovely, but not what drew me to the story. There's also a bit of a suspense plot involving why Daniel Collins is now employed at Samiah's work. Samiah is also developing an app and I enjoyed seeing her work and her passion for her career.

A great start to a series and I'm looking forward to more.

The Boyfriend Project was one of my most highly-anticipated books of 2020 and I'm thrilled to say it exceeded my expectations. What started with a date gone horribly wrong, ends up leading to some of the best girl gangs I've read about in a long time. The romance was amazing, too. I just loved Samiah and Daniel.

With great characters, a simmering slow burn and enviable friendships, The Boyfriend Project ticked so many of my boxes. It balanced romance, career and friendship storylines in a way that was very relatable and honest. Samiah was the star of the book for me. She's the kind of heroine I love reading about — strong, driven and damn good at what she does. I especially appreciated the focus on what it means to be a woman — especially a woman of color — in a STEM field. 

I place a high value on honesty in relationships — even the ones I read about in books — so the lie by omission trope doesn't always work for me, but it did here. It's not as though Daniel truly had much of a choice. His job required him to be dishonest. Did that cause some trouble in the budding romance between Samiah and Daniel? Sure. But they were a strong couple and I believed they'd give me that HEA I needed. (Not-really-spoiler alert: they did.) 

The Boyfriend Project was my first Farrah Rochon book, but I can assure you it will not be my last. Since finishing it, I've purchased quite a few of her backlist titles. I just have to decide where to start. Of course, I'm also super anxious for the next books in this series. I can't wait to see what she does with London and Taylor and their stories. I am ready!
