An escalating criminal and a struggling investigator but still a good book

The lead character in this novel is Special Agent Dagny Gray. She is anorexic who is struggling with to manage her disorder. She has a funny endearing relationship with Victor. She often refers to him as her apprentice. Although she is a strange choice for a lead character, I found her to be be very likable.

The initial crime starts with a small crime of stealing bubble gum. The criminal leaves a card at each crime saying that the next one will be bigger. Miller moves swiftly through the story line while not cutting scenes short. We get a close look at how the criminal escalates from a small petty crime to more violent crimes. The characters were all well developed and intriguing. 

I enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to other crime/mystery readers. I gave this a 3 star rating because I was surprised by some things that happened in the story line that most likely wouldn't happen in the real world. Those health related and investigative inconsistencies don't ruin the story, but they did diminish my ability to stay attentive to the story. Numerous times I thought "she shouldn't have done that" or "wow, she sure is active for someone struggling to maintain or gain weight". If you can easily overlook things like that then it is truly a good book.
