I really liked the beginning. It was weird, witty and had this offbeat charm that pulled me in fast. The setup felt fresh: a woman recovering from cancer heads to a remote town for a teaching job and things start to unravel in strange, unsettling ways. I was all in at first.

But as the story went on, it just got too odd. The plot lost its grip. The surreal elements started to feel random and the main character who was quirky at first, started to  annoy me. Her choices felt chaotic in a frustrating, not fun way.

It had potential but it veered so far off course. A unique ride but not quite my kind of weird.

Instead of finding joy and mirth in this novel, I found myself just wanting to finish it. It was short which was to its credit or I probably would have abandoned it. It wasn't awful--it was just pointless. The main character was an unlikeable mess and the story ultimately made no sense, plus I didn't really care. I stuck with it because I was hoping for some kind redeemable ending but there was no resolution, nothing to have warranted my continuing on to the bitter end. I just felt cheated out of my time.
