When I saw this book on my visit to the US, I just HAD to get it. It was beautiful. It was leather bound. And it weighed like 10 kilos, much to the dismay of my husband, who had to carry the luggage.

And it was years later that I had the courage to actually read this beast. Or I guess I should say I "conquer" it piece by piece, rather than read it. And I am glad that I did! There are really some amazing gems in there that I had never heard of, as well as the classics, seeped in that dark, broody, Gothic vibe.

This one is by no means an easy read, but a fascinating one none the less.

“The Gold-Bug” is a delightful cross between adventure and mystery.

It starts with the odd instance of a man being bitten by a pure gold, scarab-like bug. This fellow, Legrand, has captured the now-dead insect and recruits our unnamed narrator to help solve the mystery of its odd look and hefty weight.

The problem is that Legrand starts to go a little crazy, thinking that the bug is actually the first clue to the uncovering of a buried treasure. The narrator dutifully follows along, though, and starts to realize that Legrand may not be so crazy after all . . .

The beauty of the story is that the reader has no idea where the plot is going until the very end. It’s a classic adventure/mystery story in that regard, and Poe paves the way for centuries of plot twists and puzzle solving. We even get a cryptogram and some invisible ink! Honestly, it felt like this story just had to have an influence on the late Clive Cussler.

If you think you know Poe, think again. This story doesn’t read like him at all, which just fascinates me for some reason. If you want to have a look at the origins of the classic adventure tale, check out “The Gold-Bug.”

I had already read and reviewed the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Thus I will talk about the poems mostly.

I always prejudged Poe as a poet. I thought he was better at poetic prose, but after reading all of his poems, I must say he is equally brilliant at writing poems and twisted stories.

I love this man and I believe he is the precursor of mostly all the genres of literature (detective stories, satires, horror tales, adventure stories, romance, etc) His work is unimpeachable.

Through his poems, we see that he was obsessed with dreams, love and death. They are the three more remarkable themes of his verses, so recurrent, yet so fresh everytime he adressed them. Another thing that had a great impact on Poe's life was the death of his young wife Virginia, and she probably is the shadow behind all those fictional women.

I guess Poe's work left me a little bit speechless and I don't really know if there are enough words to describe it. To form an opinion on him, you should take the book and read it, through and through.
