The situation is worse now than at the time of the original Gatsby in the 1920s, meaning that the already low upward mobility of those from poorer families and communities has been cut to a trickle. One reason is that there are fewer occupations in which upward mobility is possible, so people have less opportunity to work their way up. Another is that more of the income going to the plutocracy and elite comes from outside the labour market. In response, mainstream economists have advocated more education. Education is desirable for many reasons, but more of it will not alter the character of the income distribution system.
