As usual, Cutter’s body horror is top notch. I felt this book started very strong but as it continued I began to enjoy it less. Certainly not bad enough to DNF but it felt scattered. I’m not sure that I enjoyed the ending very much - but it was a bold choice.

Several depictions of body horror and gore. If animal death, experimentation or abuse is not something you want to read, I would not recommend this story.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I thought it had a brilliant concept, and the writing is superb, but there were several times I had to drag myself into the next chapter or page. There are several flashbacks that do add to the story, but also took me out of the present and arguably, more interesting setting. There were also several pages that were just journal entries that I hated to read. But it does a great job at building an eerie setting and posing questions that you need the answers to. The author does a great job at creating an eerie, claustrophobic and unsettling scene.

Some creepy vibes and imagery, but ultimately nothing much happens, and half the book is dream sequences or flashbacks to Luke’s FAT OBESE HUGE abusive mother. Did I mention she’s fat???? Fat as HELL! Just so FAT! And EVIL! And FAT!!!!!! Is this scary enough for you yet??? FAT!

Also don’t read this if you’re interested in the concept of the “gets” disease because it serves almost no purpose in the plot, is barely explored, and is irrelevant after the first couple chapters anyway.

The first several opening chapters give you a brief overview of what exactly is so fatal about The 'Gets and how it affects everyone, not just those infected. We get to learn a bit about Luke and what his home life was like, which cones into play when he finally meets with his brother-the sole reason he is being asked to descend into the dark waters in the first place. Nick Cutter does a great job of writing tense scenes that have the reader feeling the same terrifying emotions that the characters experienced. Very descriptive style of writing. Every word painting a very vivid picture.
Chapters are kept relatively short, making this a story to breeze through in practically no time. Plenty of strange happenings to keep the reader wondering what is real and what isn't.  There are a lot of flashbacks in this novel. Sometimes they add to the story, other times they pull me out of the narrative. There is very much the theme of madness down in the deep. How your mind can turn against you.

I would pick up the book and read a little and put it back down for a while. It seemed written for young adults but it’s not. I had a hard time getting past the experiments on animals and I should have put it down for good when Luke told how Clayton experimented on the mice.
