"Prada" is a book about success, empowerment, reputation and good looks, but it's far more grounded and experienced than a Cosmo magazine. Post-grad Andrea lands an amazing role as assistant to a power player, Miranda, in the high stakes world of fashion. Neither fun, nor games, her ability to be "competent and committed" impairs her relationship with her boyfriend and parents. What I enjoyed most about this book was Weisberger's portrait of Miranda. It is a good quarter into the book before her presence is established, and the build-up to the Runway broker is palatable. The humanity, sadness and cruelty of this Miranda comes across as very real, and it deepens as the relationship between Andrea and Miranda augments. Besides, Miranda even starts calling her assistant by the right name at some point. The decisions made in the end are fascinating and leave a lot of room for the reader to ponder on. "Prada's" cultural success as a film is reasonable when you consider the richness of the source material. It's a perfect book if you're testing post graduate life, or wanting to relive those early career baby steps. Grab your soy Americano, put that phone on silent, and read away baby.

This fit my challenge prompt of a book involving fashion. I saw the movie when it came out in 2006, so why not read the origin, right? I really enjoyed the book. Certainly not a slog to read, but more meaty than what I recalled from the movie, but truthfully, I hardly remembered it at all. So, after finishing the book I re-watched the movie. No surprise, the book has whole lot more happening. This is not a criticism of the movie; it's the nature of the beast. The bottom line is I enjoyed both. I put the book in the category of an easy read that many times is a page-turner and hard to put down.

Loved the book, loved the movie, and I’m still not over it. The Devil Wears Prada is a delicious, sharp, fast-paced story about a young woman who lands a job working for a terrifyingly powerful fashion magazine editor and quickly realizes she’s entered a world where “normal” rules don’t apply. It’s glamorous, stressful, hilarious, and kind of horrifying, because the price of keeping up is always higher than you think. Beyond the fashion and name-dropping, it’s really about ambition, identity, and how easily your life can get swallowed by a job that doesn’t believe in boundaries. This one is personal for me because I read it back in 2005 before the movie even came out, and then watched the movie the second it was released. And honestly? Both hold up. The book has that addictive “one more chapter” energy, and the whole experience feels like a backstage pass to a world that’s shiny on the outside and ruthless underneath. It’s funny, it’s dramatic, and it’s weirdly relatable if you’ve ever had a job that slowly convinces you your exhaustion is a personality trait. And yes, I still watch the movie in 2026 whenever it’s on. It’s a comfort watch at this point. Iconic characters, iconic vibe, iconic everything.

I first read this book in my first year of high school for a book report (we could choose ANY book we want, and I was obsessed with the film version of this novel at the time). Since it's been...well, years...it's about time I finally give this book a review to add it to my collection!

This book was super popular and a sequel has come out (which is currently sitting on my to-read shelves waiting for me to dig into it) in recent years. For those who don't know about the first book in this series, we are following Andrea (or Andy) who gets a job at a famous, fashion magazine (similar to Vogue) which is run by the insane workaholic Miranda Priestly. Andrea believes this is the step she needs to get into her journalism career! A job at a high end fashion magazine! But, as we all know, nothing is ever that simple.

The movie is not the same as the book, but I like the think the quality of both are insanely good! Despite being different in plot, tone and character personalities, both works were fantastic! If you haven't read the book, I highly suggest it. It's unique and dramatic!

Andrea's journey involves her changing (and sometimes growing) along the way, as she encounters all of the antics of being in the fashion world: uptight assistants, overbearing bosses, deadlines, insomnia, and work/life balance.

This book is in it's own niche market - it became really popular, but it's not for everyone. The humor is a type of special, especially since you are following Andrea's life fall apart. For me, it's a five star book! It's interesting to watch the plot spiral out of control as your begging the author to give Andrea some type of happiness in the end. But honestly? It's kind of how life is - not perfect. Andrea is NOT perfect and she's definitely not the most likable character, but I grew to like her knowing all of the horror she was going through.

This is one of those rare occasions where the movie was actually better than the book. I found Andrea to be completely unlikable. Nevertheless, it's a classic and it kept me interested most of the time.

Honestly, the movie is better, but not so much that this wasn't enjoyable. Maybe it's because I saw the movie first, but the book doesn't hold the same special place in my heart. It's also a lot less PG than the film, with frequent f-words and some shocking character side stories. Also Nate has a different name and is weirdly less annoying than movie-Nate. Still, it is a really great read, and I do recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the film.

I refuse to believe that anyone whines this much. Sorry, Lauren, but I have to agree with critics: no matter how much hell you were put through at Vogue, it's kind of awful to make money off of 360 pages of gossip.

The movie, on the other hand, I enjoy. Imagine that?

Second time reading a book AFTER watching the movie, and it really ruined it for me as I started comparing the two unwillingly and couldn't imagine the scenes on my own. 
Real bummer because i love the movie so much and thought i'd enjoy the book just as much, if not more.

The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada 1) is the book that the film was based on.  Andrea is hired as one of the assistants for Miranda Priestly, the editor of 'Runway' magazine, and who rules her magazine with an iron fist, and many petty requests.

Be warned, Andrea is treated worse in the book than in the film, and there's a story line that involves alcoholism.

This is an enjoyable story, with some bits that are hard to read.

This is one of the rare instances in which I hope the movie is better than the book. This was just a so-so story without much in the way of plot or characters. Andrea, a recent college grad, aspires to write for New Yorker magazine and instead lands a job that "a million girls would DIE for" as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, infamous editor of Runway magazine. Miranda is the queen of the high-fashion/couture magazine world and calling her a despot would be maligning the good name of other despots the world over.

Miranda heaps horrific amounts of abuse on everyone around her and I kept waiting for either someone to stand up to her or for her to develop some sort of soul. About 99% of the book is tale after tale of people cowering in fear of Miranda, Miranda verbally abusing someone, Miranda expecting the impossible and then lashing out at her hapless employees, etc etc. What didn't make a lot of sense to me is why Andrea would put up with this woman since Andrea had no interest in the world of fashion. Supposedly, Andrea was in it for a year, after which point most of Miranda's assistants were promoted to fashion editor or beauty editor etc. at Runway. Not exactly the career path for a fashion-averse writer but Andrea is determined to hang in for a year.

The story grew rather stale as there was not really any conflict in terms of plot development and none of the characters really changed or developed throughout the book. This may be a fun beach read for someone who enjoys the world of high fashion and gets a kick out of the constant designer name-dropping and descriptions of clothes and shoes. As for me, I would have liked to see the author explore Miranda's character a bit more to make her more than a cardboard cutout villan and a little comeupance for her reign of terror would have been a nice touch.

This was my first time reading the book after seeing the movie dozens of times. It was just as good, if not more so, as the book and there were enough differences between the two that I wasn't constantly comparing them to each other. Book Miranda is by far worse than movie Miranda, which was a joy and a complete terror to read. I appreciated how in depth the book got with the side characters, rather than the story focusing in solely on Andrea as the movie did. Learning more about Lilly, Alex, Emily and Miranda was interesting and I felt more connected to them than I ever did watching the movie. Overall a good, quick read.

To be fair, I don't actually remember much of this book. The movie has been ingrained into my brain and I wouldn't be able to tell you which is better or worse (although, Meryl Street and Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, just saying). But I DID read it. I just don't remember...much.

Having seen the film, I wanted to read the book. It has a very different feel, and I love it. The descriptive writing is great. While there are lots of negative reviews for the book, I feel they're quite unfair. I find it hilarious how removed from reality the highly privileged are and this book. I love the story and was happy to see that it was different from the film. This story is so much deeper, looks at the background (albeit not very detailed) and showed how self-seed and selfish some people can be and how easy it can be to lose focus of real-life and the people around us.
