you can definitely see why people consider this a forebearer of ASOIAF. maybe unfair but the aspects i liked the most about ASOIAF are much weaker in dragonbone chair. Also it can't be judged solely on its' own given it's the first book of the series but i feel a little underwhelmed with where things were left at the end of the first book. lots of plots i want resolved or questions answered but i'm not sure i'm ready for another 650 pages or whatever to find out, let alone another 1k after that to totally resolve everything

A staple in every fantasy readers bookshelf. I heard it was slow going into reading this series, but by God it's really slow.
I really enjoyed the beginning hearing Simon's story and get to know all the other characters in the Hayholt, but then it just drags until about 45%.
There's also lots of dreams (which I generally dislike if not extremely well done) and going from point A to point B to point C to get the thing that'll help to fight evil. Basically your standard fantasy tropes. BUT I do want to know how the story continues. Also I painfully collected the whole series in the same paperbacks from thrift stores.
