The Eighth Detective

The Eighth Detective A Novel

Alex Pavesi2020
There are rules for murder mysteries. There must be a victim. A suspect. A detective. Grant McAllister, a professor of mathematics, once sat down and worked all the rules out – and wrote seven perfect detective stories to demonstrate. But that was thirty years ago. Now Grant lives in seclusion on a remote Mediterranean island, counting the rest of his days. Until Julia Hart, a brilliant, ambitious editor knocks on his door. Julia wishes to republish his book, and together they must revisit those old stories: an author hiding from his past and an editor keen to understand it. But there are things in the stories that don’t add up. Inconsistencies left by Grant that a sharp-eyed editor begins to suspect are more than mistakes. They may be clues, and Julia finds herself with a mystery of her own to solve. Alex Pavesi's The Eighth Detective is a love letter to classic detective stories with a modern twist, where nothing is as it seems, and proof that the best mysteries break all the rules.

Pavesi uses mathematical concepts to play with the structure of murder mysteries in this novel. Relative to most murder mysteries, I wasn't dying to know how it ended, but I was in awe of his ability to control the stories. This definitely got me thinking about murder mysteries on a more analytical level and I loved it.

I cannot recommend this book enough! I’ve read quite a few thriller/murder mysteries recently and this is by far the best one I’ve come across. The concept is so unique and it is incredibly well executed by the author. My only criticism is that it was so difficult to put down I finished it in a day and now I’m unsure how my next read will live up to this one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💫 A story within a story, this book is a love note to the Golden Age of detective and mystery novels. It's highly creative and perfectly paced. I loved it.

Boring and slow at times with little development in the modern day storyline but with a very clever twist and interesting ending

2.5 rounded up to 3 because the idea for this book is very clever (+) Interesting premise. I liked the nerdy mathematics and the way the novel with multiple stories was laid out. (-) I didn't really enjoy reading this book. I just didn't like any of the smaller mysteries inside this book, they had a lot of gruesome details. I also like mysteries that give you a chance to connect with the characters - this book was much more about the story plotlines rather than the characters.
