A couple of friends and I were pretty religiously obsessed with Animorphs in my tweens and early teens. There are like 60 books in the series, and I've read them all (obviously). The series probably introduced me to sci-fi, I can't recall. This book, however, introduced me to space opera and cemented my lifelong (well, so far) love for sci-fi.

This is one of a few "companion novels" to the main Animorphs series of books, and I'm not sure if those tangential books dared to take more risks than the pretty standard (but good) trope-y and pulpy YA serial that is the main series (there's some straight up horror in this book), or if it's just that these were the books Applegate wanted to spend time writing well so bad that she hired ghost writers for the main series… But this is a hell of a book, and the best in the Animorphs series.

It's pretty separate from the main series – so much so that a few years ago I remembered the plot of this book but not the name or series, and it was only until recently I realized it had anything to do with Animorphs. It can be read stand alone if you want, it's a kind of prequel/sidequel, but it does tie into the final book in the main series. A little. Not very.

I should probably re-read it myself as a 30-something to see if it holds up, but as a YA novel reviewed by young adult me, I award it five stars. This is some Alastair Reynolds type shit.
