Third bone-breaking, belly-busting adventure in the series that puts the "funny" back in! um! funny series. That didn't really work, did it?

I love this series. I know Harry Potter is very celebrated, but this is the best MG series I’ve ever read. There is none of the over-explaining or slapstick comedy jokes I’ve seen in other MG books. The dialogue is sharp, the relationships are realistically portrayed (whether it be friendship, the one with the obnoxious boss who always takes the credit for your work, or the dynamic between nemeses), and the action scenes are AWESOME (and this from someone who tends to get bored reading fight scenes). This book specifically seems to be moving the series in a new direction: there’s more substance, more at risk, more feels (but not in a sappy way). Things are getting REAL. I loved the new characters who were introduced, the new possibilities for Valkyrie’s powers, and yes, even that dramatic cliff-hanger. This doesn’t get full marks simply because the pacing at the beginning was a little meandering for my taste, but man, did that change. 4 STARS, and looking forward to the next book!
