I love her down to the dark space around her bones, and I want to keep her, to have her with me, to smell her on my clothes. I want to tie tinsel in her hair at Christmas and put a new height mark on the door on her sixth birthday and slip into bed beside her before I go to sleep tonight. I want to carry on being her world.

I think this really spells out Julia’s fears right away and thought this was also probably something that a lot of people can relate to in early motherhood

I didn’t stop wanting her when Molly was born; if anything, I wanted her more. Molly was my second heart for nine months, but when the nurses ripped her out I didn’t think of my body, robbed of its pendulum. I thought, “Twenty years ago, Molly was me. Twenty years ago, I was Mam,” and I felt closer to her than I had ever felt when we had lived in the same house, breathed the same air. When Molly cried I wanted to turn up on Mam’s doorstep with my throbbing head, sore chest, and bundle of baby. “Is this how you felt?” I wanted to ask. “Did you feel this mad? This tired? Did you feel like other people had a secret book you’d never been given? Is this why you were the way you were? Will she turn out like me?”

This one just made me really sad and thought it showed how the abuse she went through can still cause shame. Just made me really sad like this whole book 💀

We had been like a gone-wrong bird family, me and Mam: her out scavenging, me in the nest. She had only sometimes hacked up half-chewed worm parts for me, and whatever scraps she had given me I had swallowed down. I thought of it now and felt coldly degraded

this book is one of the best things i have ever read. i was in such a reading slump until someone made me read this. this book made me reevaluate my life choices and what i consider to be important. i made me think about how lucky i am. i’ve never read a book before where i have kinda supported the murderer but chrissie completely changed me. 

Also the idea of seeing 2 different points of view, on of a child and one of a young adult, just to find out the we’re the same person!!!! it was an amazing experience.

This book was a hard read. I had a hard time sympathizing with Chrissie’s character because of how much of a jerk she was, despite the terrible conditions she grew up in. It made me so frustrated that people like Chrissie’s mom have children.

I really really liked this book as disturbing as some parts of it were. I thought the two different POVs were done really well and I feel like I’ll be thinking about this book for the rest of the year. I also think this is great for being the author’s first work of fiction! 

this was a good read, I liked it. I wasn't sure of liking Chrissie as a murderer but I'm impressed of her looking after molly and trying not to repeat hee childhood with her. As for her childhood pov that shits scary

I have to say, I hated this book the minute I started reading it. Australian historical fiction? Since when? But by the end I was SOBBING myself to sleep. I think the reason I didn't like it so much was because I expected a super disturbing thriller. While it did mess with my head, it was more symbolic and delicate. I don't understand how authors can develop character as intricate and complicated as Chrissie, and while it wasn't my favourite, I can appreciate good writing when I read it.

What a haunting tale of the inner workings of a child who commits murder….. and likes it. Peeling back Chrissie’s layers was frightening, disturbing, and at times physically nauseating. It takes a real deep look at the complexities of child abuse and long lasting trauma. Don’t read this if you’re especially sensitive to child neglect, physical and emotional abuse, and child murder. However, if you can look past it, I highly recommend reading this to gain a new perspective on child criminals.

LOVED. While twisted and clearly troubled, the younger version of the main character was honestly kind of funny (but yeah she was still a murderer), her dialogue and inner monologue cracked me up at times.
