I have many feelings about this book and I don't know what any of them are


edit, exactly a year later: ok this is funny because this book ended up being one of the ones I will literally never forget through a combination of Henry and Julia and Rupert and Toby - like do I remember the plot? no not really tbh but I do, 100%, remember the characters, and that I appreciate. I was sitting here thinking about a very specific December entry because it made me really happy and still does actually but. Yeah. It was good

edit, July 23 ‘23: That above is HILARIOUS bc as I was rereading this I was sitting there thinking that I remembered absolutely Nothing from the entire series except that specific December entry (BANGER!!!!) and Henry. It felt like a first read, I’d forgotten so much (which is why I reread books). But I cannot remember why I gave this three stars. It feels very arbitrary now LOL. This series is like, alternatively This Does Not Read Like A Journal and This Is Profound ! but it’s fun. Every other thought has escaped my mind now 👍 the December entry 👍👍

4.5 stars, actually. This book is, by far, the best of the trilogy. It is the most exciting, the one that most of all will keep you awake at night to read more, because you need to know what's happening to the characters, you need to know that your favourites are okay - but then again, they all are your favourites because they're all flawed and terribly lovely for one reason or another. Except for Rupert, maybe, whose only flaw is his shiness and is entirely perfect in my eyes. Okay, back to the book: there is not one single moment that'll leave you bored - not once will you look at the closed book in a moment of spare time when you normally get back to reading and think "oh, no, I'll do something else instead". Sophie's entries will keep you alway thorougly entertained - mind you, you will cry. I know I did. (view spoiler)[Especially when Anthony died, and Toby went missing, and Henry died. (hide spoiler)] When certain things happened, I couldn't believe it because Sophie couldn't believe it. This book is the best written of them all. I don't know anyone who was in England during the WWII, but at times it felt like I was there myself: that's how utterly engrossing this book is. You can see Sophie growing, and it is the best feature of this book: how natural her growing is, from a girl to a woman. (view spoiler)[I realized how much she had grown up when she and Simon had that encounter in early June 1942. Everything happened smoothly and really naturally - like it was bound to happen, in those circumstances. The scene itself was very sensual and well built, as there was the bit before dinner when he buttons up her dress and she shivers when his fingertips brush against her back, then the mutual "strange tension" on their way to the restaurant, the dance, and the love-making. But I really loved how she didn't dream of romanticising any of it: she knew how much they both needed comfort and how the war and the guilt were acting on Simon, and how his proposal was actually more selfish than anything else - that more than anything shows, to me, how much she'd grown. (hide spoiler)] Her life is interesting, some of her thoughts are so deep and heartfelt you feel like hugging her. I'm really enthusiastic about this book, so, everyone, go read it!
