This is a first time I read something by Ksmeron Hurley. I must confess I was suprised by how many times I felt shocked and maybe a little embarrassed that I have never thought about some of the problems she talks about.

Three and a half stars, rounded up to four because it was very readable. I've been a fan of Hurley's blog for a long time - I think she has interesting things to say and, as noted, presents them in a way that's really readable. That said, she's way, way more enamored of 80s dude action heroes than I am (though I enjoy them!) and when talking about women (both fictional and real, including her own experiences and outlook) she focuses pretty much exclusively on a gender-flipped version of that trope. It's interesting, but there's not really any mention of other kinds of strength or leadership. Ultimately that still presents the idea of female power as being within a very narrow scope, so the collection falls a little flat for me.

Kameron Hurley is a tremendous fiction author, but her non-fiction work is as important, if not more so. This collection of essays is timely, powerful, and important.

The Geek Feminist Revolution is a collection of essays that discuss writing, SFF, and social justice. It's an angry book with sharp, ugly words, and the pieces within can be repetitive and aren't always novel or complex. However, it is a fantastic volume given who it is targeting: fans of the spec fiction genre who may not actually be that informed about political and social issues. Hurley doesn't hold back with her rage, and she speaks bluntly about the challenges of writing stories that aim to envision a better world. She gives readers an important, non-academic foundation for talking about these issues, and gives words to problems many of her readers may experience, but not be able to express.

These essays really make you think, and I appreciate that. They bring to light all the things that people are trying to push back into the shadows because they're too uncomfortable to address directly and say HEY ACKNOWLEDGE THIS. I really liked that. I think there needs to be more stuff like that out there. 

Also now I really want to read Kameron Hurley's fictional writings as well!

This was a very interesting read, the beginning was probably the weakest part of the book so if you are struggling I would carry on for a couple more essays as I personally feel that they get better. I enjoyed that this book covered feminism in the writing and publishing world as I've not heard about many books that do so and it enlightened me on a few issues and scandals that have happened over the years. Kameron Hurley does not hide her frustration or her feelings towards the sexist society in which we evolve in. Her narrative is open and honest. She also reflects on herself and the errors that she has made in the past, admitting that she will always be "the villain in someone else's story." It was a refreshing view and I enjoyed that aspect of the read.

I generally leave my five star ratings to seminal pieces of work that I think will change the way I look at the world. I'm disappointed I couldn't give this one a five but gosh darn it came so close. If you view yourself a feminist, sci-fi fan or not, you have to pick up this book. I would love to say more but I genuinely feel the need to write a full blog post (or a couple) about this collection of essays. Read it, just pick it up and read it. Buy it and read the hell out of it.
